Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course, "Text editing for International Media," is designed to equip students with the advanced editorial skills necessary to thrive in the complex and fast-paced global news environment. It moves beyond basic copyediting to address the unique challenges of preparing text for an international audience, including cultural sensitivity, clarity for non-native readers, and adherence to diverse style guides . The practical component of the course offers hands-on experience with a wide array of texts, from wire-service reports and press releases to opinion pieces and social media content. Students will engage in rigorous editing exercises, focusing on syntax, grammar, and style while also tackling higher-level concerns such as structural coherence, sourcing, and the ethical implications of editorial choices. Special attention is given to the integration of multimedia elements and the editor's role in enhancing a story's impact across digital, print, and broadcast formats. By the end of the course, students will have developed a robust editorial portfolio and a keen critical eye, preparing them for a career in international journalism, publishing, or corporate communications where precision and cultural awareness are paramount.
