Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course has been designed for students who are interested in business, in local and international companies, and, in practical, aspects of business. Through studying business cases, students will develop their English speaking skills, improve their business vocabulary, reading and business writing skills. Students will participate in debates about the given cases, when they will express their opinion on various aspects of running a business. The course is practice-oriented, and the students will not only improve their English, but will study practical aspects of business, using examples of one or two companies.
Learning Objectives
- The aim of the course is to develop an English communicative competence (at least B2+ CEFR http://www.cambridgeenglishteacher.org/what_is_this), including linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, discourse and strategic competence, as well as to develop academic skills necessary for using English for studying, research and professional activities.

Assessment Elements
- Independent WorkProjects and any types of prepared oral and written responses. Tasks requiring oral assessment may be checked on a sample basis. Per module, each student must have at least three grades for independent work. The types of independent work and the total number of required grades are determined by the instructor depending on the group level.
- Test/Control workIntermediate written assignments of various types (test tasks on lexical and grammatical material covered, reading and listening comprehension tests, paragraph and essay writing tasks, etc.). Tests are conducted at least once per topic. At the end of Module 1, a Module 1 test is conducted, which may include a reading test, listening test, and vocabulary/grammar test.
- Oral AssessmentAny types of tasks assessing unprepared oral speech: responses to task cards, questions, participation in debates, etc. Per module, each student must have at least three grades for full unprepared oral responses.
- ProjectThe final assessment component is the presentation and defence of the project. Individual and group projects are allowed. The project defence is conducted within 10 calendar days before the examination period. All current grades are rounded to one decimal place during Modules 1–3. The final course grade is rounded to a whole number only at the end of the course, after the final test.
