Course Syllabus
Abstract
Literature and Visual Studies introduces students to one of the most dynamic interdisciplinary areas of the contemporary humanities: the image and its relation to the written word. The course asks what an image is, what powers and fears have been attached to it across the history of culture, and how literature and the theory of the image illuminate one another. It moves from the theory of the image (W. J. T. Mitchell’s “pictorial turn”) through iconoclasm, the phenomenology of the image, the afterlife of forms (Aby Warburg), reproduction and the simulacrum, and the society of the spectacle, to photography, the “scopic regimes” of modernity (Martin Jay), the gaze, surveillance, and the image in the age of artificial intelligence.
Learning Objectives
- To give students a systematic understanding of the image as a problem shared by literature, art history and the theory of culture, and of the principal concepts of visual studies; to acquaint them with the major theories of the image — from Mitchell’s “pictorial turn” and the theory of iconoclasm to the phenomenology of the image, Warburg’s afterlife of forms, reproduction and the simulacrum, the “scopic regimes” of modernity, the theory of the gaze, and the contemporary technical and generative image — and to develop the skills of analysing the interaction of the verbal and the visual.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- The student has a general understanding of the field of Literature and Visual Studies and of the relation between the verbal and the visual.

- After the Human Eye: Generative Images, the Return of the Idol, and a Farewell to Visual Studies
