Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course focuses on contemporary scientific and societal problems that drive the development of chemical research. Master’s students will explore key growth areas such as sustainable chemical technologies, advanced functional materials, energy and environmental solutions. Particular attention is given to the role of scientific communication in shaping research agendas, building collaborations, and presenting results to both specialist and interdisciplinary audiences. Through critical reading of primary literature, seminar discussions, and project-based assignments, students will develop skills in formulating research questions, writing concise scientific texts, and delivering effective oral presentations. The course is aimed at preparing students for active participation in international scientific discourse and for more independent work on their own research projects.
Learning Objectives
- This course examines how present-day chemical research engages with major scientific challenges while cultivating students' capacity for autonomous and critical thought. The curriculum concentrates on rapidly evolving frontiers — sustainable chemical technologies, next-generation functional materials, energy- and environment-oriented solutions, and computationally driven molecular design — as lenses through which students learn to interrogate the field's most pressing questions. Students will practice dissecting primary scientific literature, formulating original research questions, and situating their own inquiries within broader international research agendas. Particular weight is placed on the craft of scientific communication: participants will cultivate proficiency in composing manuscripts and concise proposals, delivering research presentations, constructing effective visual figures, and taking part in scholarly dialogue and manuscript critique.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- A student compares research design
- Use revision and peer-feedback to expand and complicate writing and thinking
- Students will be able to understand the functioning of academic research, writing, editing, and international publishing
- The students will develop skills necessary for successful participation in seminars and for writing papers in English
- - Master skills in designing and writing academic research proposals, framing research questions, developing hypotheses, and preparing literature reviews;
- * Students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as reading and writing skills; work with both primary and secondary sources of information; provide one’s own opinion, and take part in arguments on a variety of topics (individually or in small groups).
- Students will be able to prepare scientifically rigorous journal articles, abstracts, graphical abstracts, and patent-oriented materials, applying IMRaD principles, publication ethics, intellectual-property considerations, and responsible AI-assisted writing practices.
- Student can draft a short research proposal that communicates feasibility, significance, and expected impact to a funding audience
