Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course Research in Economics and Management of Innovation and Technology provides an advanced introduction to the economic and managerial foundations of innovation and technological change. It examines how innovation drives economic growth, transforms industries, shapes competitive advantage, and influences organizational performance. Drawing on perspectives from innovation economics, strategic management, entrepreneurship, and organizational theory, the course explores the mechanisms through which firms, industries, and economies create, develop, and capture value from innovation. Students engage with seminal and contemporary research on Schumpeterian growth, industry dynamics, technological change, organizational learning, and innovation management. Particular attention is devoted to the interplay between technological opportunities, firm capabilities, leadership, strategic decision-making, and institutional environments in shaping innovation outcomes. The course develops students' ability to critically evaluate academic literature, understand theoretical and empirical research designs, and apply innovation-related concepts to contemporary challenges such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, platform competition, and technological catch-up. Through article discussions, empirical analysis, and research proposal development, students acquire the analytical and methodological skills necessary for conducting research in economics and management of innovation and technology.

The course develops students’ ability to critically analyze contemporary research, apply relevant conceptual and methodological approaches, and conduct independent research on innovation processes at the firm, industry, regional, and national levels.
