Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course is designed for the 2nd-year Undergraduate (Bachelor's) students whose major is History or whose interest lies in History both as an academic discipline and as a professional field. The course is offered within the HSE unified “Concept of the Development of Foreign-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students” and adheres to the "Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessment of Students at National Research University Higher School of Economics” . “English for Specific Purposes. History-3” continues the courses “English for Specific Purposes. History-1,2” and covers Modules 1-3 of the 2nd-year studies of the Bachelor's students. There are no blocking points of assessment. The final grade consists of the following elements: 0,1 – Attendance, 0,1 – English Grammar and Vocabulary Test, 0,1 – Home Assignment , 0,2 – Written Assessment, 0,2 – Oral Assessment, 0,3- Final Assessment.
Learning Objectives
- The course is aimed at developing BA students’ professional intercultural communicative competence (PICC) that is referred to as the “integrative ability of solving professional tasks with the help of foreign language” . Development of the PICC, as an integrative goal of this course, ensures plunging students as active participants into the process of solving a variety of professionally-oriented tasks with the help of the English language that model a broad diverse social and quasi-professional context of their future career paths.
- Engaging students in such quasi-professional activities allows to set the following learning objectives of the course: find out purposes, useful strategies and means of learning about History; work with different sources and types of information for finding new solutions to the existing problems of the historical field; discover various types and genres of texts that narrate, describe and analyse historical periods, events and issues; design innovative creative and personally meaningful research, educational and professional projects related to historical field using Information and Communications technology (ICT); practice analytical and critical thinking skills; acquire an ability to cooperate in a team and work autonomously; reflect on the personal and team work and experience; develop their problem-solving skills and creativity.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Develop reading skills: understanding of articles, reports, straightforward and specialised texts concerned with contemporary problems at the threshold/vantage/effective operational proficiency level; understanding of text structure; skills of using basic reading techniques skimming and scanning (predicting, understanding main ideas, understanding details)
- Produce summary, academic essay, review.
- Develop listening skills: understanding dialogues and polylogues on both familiar and unfamiliar topics; understanding lectures; understanding academic/ professional presentations which are linguistically complex; using basic listening techniques (predicting, understanding main ideas and details); following extended speech and complex lines of arguments; note-taking
- Produce in speaking: debates (debate on abstract, complex topics), monologue (descriptive, informative, reasoning), presentation (can give reasons in support or against a particular point of view, give the advantages and disadvantages of various opinions).
- Integrate smartly the learned theories, concepts, terms and definitions from the professional context into the speech, to talk about history career paths and choices; to describe the job of a historian in academia and non-historical fields – its challenges and prospects; to design and present a concept/statement of an academic (research/educational) event related to history.
Assessment Elements
- 0,1 – Attendance (cannot be retaken)Attendance The element’s weight in the final grade – 10% Attendance grade is calculated using a 10-point grading scale based on a student’s attendance rate. The element CANNOT be retaken.
- 0,1 – English Grammar and Vocabulary Test (can be retaken within 7 days)
- 0,1 – Home Assignment (HA) (can be retaken within 7 days)
- 0,2 – Written Assessment (WA) (cannot be retaken)Written Assessment (WA) The element’s weight in the final grade – 20% WA consists of minimum 4 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, essays, graph descriptions, reviews, reports). WA can also include annotations, emails, listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary tasks at the end of a section or topic. WA refers to written tasks that students complete in class.
- 0,2 – Oral Assessment (OA) (cannot be retaken)Oral Assessment (OA) The element’s weight in the final grade – 20% OA consists of minimum 3 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, a monologue for 1-year students as well as dialogues and presentations) that students do in class.
- 0,3 – Final Assessment (FA) (can be retaken during the retake period)
