Abstract

The "English for Specific Academic Purposes. Maths and Information Technology – 3" course is designed for learners requiring mastery of specialist domains of professional English, specifically the English of Mathematics, Computing, and the Internet. The principal rationale for acquiring this linguistic competence is to develop a comprehensive set of professional skills and to perform domain-specific job-related functions. Consequently, the course is structured upon a thorough assessment of purposes, needs, and the communicative functions for which English is requisite. It encompasses subjects ranging from Mathematics to Information Technology, and its core principle is the integration of English instruction within the subject matter area central to the learners' academic and professional trajectory, thereby enabling the direct application of acquired language skills to their primary field of study. Course content is meticulously selected, designed, and organized to address a broad spectrum of contemporary specialist issues, with a particular focus on task-specific and job-specific vocabulary, alongside the development of English language communication skills customized to the sector of Mathematics and Information Technology. This approach facilitates students' confidence in preparing mid-term projects and composing their theses, and ensures their effective functioning within an English-speaking professional environment. The course is delivered in accordance with the Concept for the Development of Foreign Language Communicative Competence of HSE University Students. Admission to this first-year course requires that students have attained a score of 70 points on the HSE entrance language proficiency assessment. Throughout the course, students are expected to complete home assignments and tests of various formats designed to assess reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills, as well as vocabulary and grammar usage. The forms of ongoing assessment include Oral Assessment, Written Assessment, and Home Assignments, while the interim assessment comprises a Final Assessment; no blocking assessment elements are included in the grading structure. Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired the skills and confidence necessary for effective professional communication in English at the advanced level of communicative competence, commensurate with the demands of academic and professional activities within the fields of Mathematics and Information Technology.
