Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course introduces the key tenets of the structural approach to natural language and the elements of the main linguistic subdisciplines: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and historical/comparative linguistics. The major theoretical approaches, such as seeking for functional motivations or formulating mathematically precise rules for the formation of syntactic structures, are also introduced. The objective of the course is to adapt a potentially non-linguistics graduates to the background required to take more advanced master-level courses and to read academic papers.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Motivate a structural view of natural language
  • Provide the basic machinery for phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic analysis
  • Put the synchronic study of language into the context of historical linguistics and language change
  • Introduce the array of issues in linguistics where quantitative or computational analysis is fruitful
