Course Syllabus
Abstract
Korean Language. Elementary Course is a 64-academic hours course designed for the 2st grade students of the International Bachelor's in Business and Economics’s program. It is studied in 3-4 modules and aims to provide students with a basic knowledge and competences of Korean language and focuses on the acquisition of practical communicative skills. It covers basic grammar and essential vocabulary, allowing participants to communicate in Korean on a limited range of daily topics. Participants will learn to recognize and write both simplified and traditional characters, develop the skills of comprehending and producing Korean in speech and writing, use proper vocabulary and language structures.
By the end of the course, students typically achieve an international level of A2 on the scale of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment" (CEFR) or level 2 out of 6 on the national TOPIK exam for determining proficiency in the Korean language.
The program aims to achieve maximum alignment of students' foreign language training levels with international standards in foreign language education.
Learning Objectives
- To learn a set of important words, common phrases, and expressions used in both written and spoken Korean, which are needed for effective communication.
- To be able to translate common phrases accurately between Korean and Russian, both in speaking and writing, and to handle most situations while in Korea, including sharing personal experiences and explaining thoughts and opinions.
- To develop skills in summarizing and making notes on written and spoken Korean texts for everyday conversations.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Greet and introduce themselves in Korean.
- Correctly write and read the letters of the Korean alphabet.
- Use days of the week, weekend, months.
- Ask for and explain how to get to places.
- Talk about the university, and about various events.
- Name objects and ask about them.
- Explain themselves in a cafe and a store, discuss the culture of restaurant invitations in Korea and Russia, and express food preferences, making orders in a restaurant.
- Describe the location of objects.
- Learn to apologize, express gratitude, sympathy, and surprise.
- Talk about family and count objects using two counting systems.
- Describe daily routines and schedules.
- Ask about and talk about hobbies.

- 1. Hangul (한글) and pronouncing rules
- 2. Greetings, farewells, expressions of gratitude and apology, self-introduction (인사, 사과, 감사의 표현, 자기소개)
- 3. Academic life (university, dormitory, extracurricular, etc.) (학교생활)
- 4. Family (가족)
- 5. Cafeteria (식당)
- 6. Everyday life (일상생활)
- 7. City life (shopping, transport, location and direction) (사회생활)
- 8. Meetings (만남)
- 9. Hobbies (취미)
- 10. Holidays (명절)
Assessment Elements
- HomeworkHomework: current assignments on various types of speech activity based on written, oral, audio and video materials and their combinations, including assignments aimed at preparing for current, modular and examination work, which are completed by the student independently and checked by the teacher throughout the course, are based on the course material and may vary slightly depending on the individual characteristics of the group. Students are assigned homework following each section, with a one-week period allocated for its completion.
- Modular testsModular tests: written lexical and grammatical tests based on various types of course materials, for the completion of which the student is given 2-3 academic hours, are completed directly in class
- ExamExam: during the exam, students will be tested on their ability to understand spoken and written information. In the "Grammar" part, students need to complete sentences using the correct words and particles. In the "Listening" part, students listen to information and answer questions about it. In the "Writing" part, students write an essay on a given topic, about 15 sentences long. In the "Speaking" part, students answer 10 questions clearly and fully when asked by the teacher
