Abstract
This course offers a comprehensive exploration of ethical theory and its practical application within the management of cultural institutions, spanning ten thematic sessions that progress from foundational philosophical concepts to concrete professional challenges. Beginning with an examination of ethics as both the condition and consequence of culture, the course establishes morality as an axiological compass that evolves through the continuous reassessment of cultural norms. It then surveys major ethical frameworks—virtue ethics, utilitarianism, deontology, existentialism, justice theory, and ethics of care—providing students with conceptual tools for analyzing complex moral dilemmas.
The course subsequently addresses pressing contemporary issues: ESG principles and corporate social responsibility in cultural management; the ethics of colonial museum collections and restitution; curatorial responsibility regarding authorship, interpretation, and commercialization; inclusion as proactive tolerance within DEI frameworks; the tension between commercial imperatives and artistic integrity in cultural marketing; and the moral foundations of philanthropy, including challenges of accepting donations from ethically questionable sources. The concluding session synthesizes these themes by proposing concrete methodologies for ethical dispute resolution and critically examining the problem of the "moral expert."
Through engagement with foundational and contemporary texts, professional codes of ethics, and case study analysis, students develop critical reasoning skills and ethical sensitivity necessary for navigating the complex moral landscape of contemporary cultural institutions. Ultimately, the course affirms that ethical reflection is not an external constraint on cultural management but an integral dimension of institutional integrity, public accountability, and the enduring social value of the arts.
