Аннотация

The course 'English for the Current Social Agenda' consists of two aspects: the grammar aspect and the critical thinking aspect. The first presents a systematic picture of practical English grammar at the proficiency level; the second allows the students to enhance their vocabulary and communication skills through discussion of various topics within the current social agenda.

The goal of the course is to consolidate practical grammar of the English language and enhance critical thinking skills at the profficiecy level.

Define and distinguish key concepts related to social issues, inclusion, and language.
Identify and classify examples of inclusive and non-inclusive practices in texts, case studies, workplace scenarios, and everyday communication.
Interpret and explain how social, cultural, economic, and linguistic factors influence attitudes, policies, and behaviours in different contexts.
Apply appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures in spoken and written communication to describe, analyse, and discuss the topic.
Analyse case studies, data extracts, narratives, and media examples to uncover underlying assumptions, biases, and implications for inclusion and social justice.
Compare and contrast perspectives across cultures, time periods, and social groups, using relevant concepts and evidence.
Evaluate the effectiveness, fairness, and impact of policies, practices, and language choices, providing reasoned arguments and justification.
Formulate and propose context-sensitive strategies or actions that could improve inclusion, accessibility, wellbeing, and communication in institutions and communities.
Reflect critically on their own language use, attitudes, and experiences, identifying areas for change and personal development.
Synthesize insights from different course topics into coherent spoken and written texts (e.g. discussions, individual long-turns, summaries, reports) that demonstrate both conceptual understanding and appropriate language use.
