Программа дисциплины
Аннотация
The course proposes a review of the study of religions framework in its cognitive strictness, structure and discipline interactions and in difference from theology. The course demonstrates the non-research character of theology as realizing valuable non-cognitive aim and thus damaging the study of religions while blended with it. Theology coincides with the study of religions only in its discipline organization. Accordingly, the questions to be discussed within the limits of the course are: What kind of arrangement of the study of religions could provide it as a consequently cognitive discipline? Why is methodology of humanities not effective in providing cognitivity in the study of religions? Why is theology spontaneously disguised as a cognitive? How could be made a distinction between the study of religions and theology? How could phenomenology of religion prompt the study of religions cognitivity? Clarifying these questions the course shows a possibility for interpreting the religious as an effect in consciousness, advantages and difficulties of such an understanding.
Цель освоения дисциплины
- Understanding of the cognitive specificity of the study of religions, ground and methods for its distinction from theology. Understanding of the difficulties in studying the religious. Possible methods on overcoming them. Understanding of the most influential ideas (their achievements and lacks in clarifying and solving problems) in the main disciplines of the study of religions.
Планируемые результаты обучения
- Differentiate between natural and supernatural frameworks for understanding the religious; critically evaluate the main attempts to depict the supernatural—directly, through comparative description of the religious, and through the consciousness of the believer—and identify the common methodological error of substituting the supernatural with the origin, causes, or history of religion. They will also be able to clearly distinguish “religion” from “the religious” as separate objects of study.
- Trace the historical process of the study of religions spontaneous separation from theology, recognizing the role of institutional, national and confessional (especially Protestant) factors in shaping it as both a complex of disciplines and a single discipline.
- Articulate the strict value–knowledge distinction as the cognitive foundation for religious studies, refute objections to value-indifferent knowledge by distinguishing thought from feeling, and explain how value-neutral representation (as thought showing data and controlling values) enables a clear demarcation from theology.
Содержание учебной дисциплины
- 1. A problem of understanding the religious
- 2. A cognitive tendency in forming the study of religions
- 3. An attempt of cognitive construction of the study of religions using as basis strict valuable-cognitive distinction
