Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course examines the legal order of the Olympic Movement as a distinctive transnational regulatory system built around the Olympic Charter and the institutions of the International Olympic Committee. Students study the legal status of the IOC, national Olympic committees and international federations, the regulation of the Olympic Games, athlete eligibility and Olympic commercial rights. Particular attention is paid to the interaction of Olympic regulation with state law and to dispute resolution through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The course prepares lawyers and managers for professional work within the structures of the Olympic Movement.
Course Objective
The aim of the course is to provide students with systematic knowledge of the legal regulation of the Olympic Movement and to develop the ability to solve legal problems arising in the organization of Olympic sport and the protection of its participants' rights.
Learning Objectives
- The discipline studies the legal status of the IOC, FIFA and other international organizations. The focus of the study is also the formation of the international market for professional qualifications in the field of sports.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Knows the structure of the Olympic Movement and the legal nature of the Olympic Charter.
- Knows the legal status of the IOC, national Olympic committees and international federations.
- Knows the contractual and regulatory framework of organizing the Olympic Games.
- Knows the eligibility rules and the system of Olympic commercial rights.
- Is able to qualify legal disputes arising within the Olympic Movement.
- Is able to analyze the interaction of Olympic regulation with national and international law.
- Is able to assess the legal risks of participation in and organization of Olympic events.
- Is able to apply anti-doping rules to situations in Olympic sport.
- Has command of the skills of legal support for Olympic entities and athletes.
- Has command of the skills of representing parties before the CAS in Olympic disputes.
- Has command of the skills of drafting documents related to Olympic commercial rights.
