Course Syllabus
Abstract
This 2-year course is designed for students with no prior experience in the language. The course starts with introducing pronunciation, reading, typing, and writing. Great emphasis will be placed on pronunciation, listening comprehension, and everyday “survival” language. Through a wide range of learning activities such as daily dictation, oral and written tests, recalling conversations, storytelling, dialogue construction, presentations, the course focuses students towards improving their pronunciation; learning new grammar patterns; and applying the grammar and vocabulary learned. Various supplementary listening materials will be used from the beginning of this course to give students an authentic, practical way to learn correct pronunciation and reinforce class lessons. Additionally, the course will integrate Spanish culture into language learning to enhance the understanding of cultural influence on the language. The course aims providing well-balanced development of the four language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the Spanish language, while also providing students with a deeper understanding of Spain and its culture.
Learning Objectives
- The objective of the "Communicative Practice of a Second Foreign Language (Spanish)" discipline of the "International Business" program is to train specialists who master the level of Spanish that will enable them to achieve professional objectives of a communicative, informative, and professional nature corresponding to level A2+ (Platform) of the European classification of the degree of competence and mastery of the language.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Can understand ideas, passages and sentences from spoken and written Spanish, including those typically found in academic communication
- Produces short, simple spoken and written texts in Spanish, expressing ideas clearly, using mostly simple sentences
- Takes part in simple conversations in Spanish, including those typical for academic communication

Assessment Elements
- Continuous AssessmentThis assessment component is designed to evaluate the student's linguistic knowledge (phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar), as well as the development of language skills and communicative competence. The results of continuous assessment provide students with timely feedback and support adjustments to their individual learning process. Continuous assessment may include phonetic, vocabulary, and grammar quizzes; listening and reading tasks; as well as the production of spoken (e.g., monologues, dialogues, presentations) and written (e.g., letters, paragraphs, essays) texts. Continuous assessment is conducted during scheduled class sessions and comprises 6–8 assessment tasks (for courses meeting four class periods per week) or 3–4 assessment tasks (for courses meeting two class periods per week) in Modules 1–2, and 8– 10 assessment tasks (four class periods per week) or 4–5 assessment tasks (two class periods per week) in Modules 3–4. The final continuous assessment grade is calculated as the arithmetic mean of all continuous assessment scores. The final grade is not rounded.
- Oral examThis assessment component evaluates the student's ability to communicate effectively in spoken Spanish across a range of communicative situations, including those requiring the use of a written text as a prompt.
- Classroom workThis assessment component evaluates the student's overall performance in class, including preparation for each class session (homework completion), engagement in the learning process, active use of the target language (e.g., initiative in responding and participation in dialogues), and the quality of all classroom activities. Performance is assessed at each class session on a scale of 0 to 3 points. The final score is calculated according to the following formula: Final score = (Accumulated score × 10) / Maximum possible score.
- Final written testThis assessment component provides a comprehensive evaluation of the student's vocabulary and grammar knowledge, reading and listening skills, and ability to communicate effectively in writing in a range of communicative situations in the target language. The Final Written Assessment is administered at the end of the course and consists of four sections: Vocabulary and Grammar Reading Listening Writing The maximum score for each section is 10 points, and each section contributes 25% to the overall assessment grade. The maximum overall score is 10 points.
