Course Syllabus
Abstract
A typical course on political discourse analysis is framed with reference to only one conceptual framework: critical theory. This course is different. It introduces students to a dialogue between ‘critical discourse analysis’ and an alternative way of thinking about and conducting research on political discourse.
The course is in two parts. Part one mainly deals with theoretical and methodological questions, like: What is political discourse? What are the inferences of discourse analysis that make it possible to frame a research project at the intersection of political science and international relations? Part two mainly addresses empirical questions about the ideas of political discourse in state-bound practices and why these illuminate a problem of political order in global governance.
The course begins with comparing two theories, critical theory and hermeneutics, for understanding the logic(s) of political discourse analysis. This discussion raises doubts about whether these two approaches can be combined in a coherent way. It also supports a choice in research design to work with a modified hermeneutic approach. This is an approach that accepts a critique of the ‘fusion of horizons’ between theory and praxis for clarifying the method and sensibility required in the analysis of political discourse of global governance.
During this course, students will learn how to conduct their own political discourse analyses. With reference to historical cases about Britain, the US and – in greatest depth – Russia, we will evaluate and explain: i) the instrumental rationality of ideas in political projects of global governance in the twenty-first century; ii) the legitimation and delegitimation of these political projects in practices initiated by policymakers as they defend the ‘good intentions’ of their actions; iii) comparable ideas of regional and world orders articulated in political discourse and; iv) the character of the search for political order in global governance for debates in political theory and international relations about the origins of a special relationship, a great power identity, a foreign policy, and the disorder of revolutionary change, all in political rhetoric.
Типичный курс по анализу политического дискурса строится с опорой только на одну концептуальную рамку: критическую теорию. Этот курс знакомит студентов с диалогом между «критическим дискурсивным анализом» и альтернативным способом мышления и проведения исследований политического дискурса.
Курс состоит из двух частей. Первая часть в основном посвящена теоретическим и методологическим вопросам, таким как: Что такое политический дискурс? Каковы выводы анализа дискурса, которые позволяют сформулировать исследовательский проект на пересечении политической науки и международных отношений? Вторая часть в основном касается эмпирических вопросов о концепциях политического дискурса в рамках государственных практик и о том, почему они освещают проблему политического порядка в глобальном управлении.
Курс начинается с сопоставления двух теорий, критической теории и герменевтики, для понимания логики(ок) анализа политического дискурса. Это обсуждение вызывает сомнения в том, могут ли эти два подхода быть объединены в последовательный способ. Это также поддерживает выбор в исследовательском дизайне для работы с модифицированным герменевтическим подходом. Это подход, который принимает критику «слияния горизонтов» между теорией и практикой для уточнения метода и чувствительности, необходимых для анализа политического дискурса глобального управления.
В ходе этого курса студенты научатся проводить собственные анализы политического дискурса. Ссылаясь на исторические примеры о Великобритании, США и, в наибольшей степени, России, мы будем оценивать и объяснять: i) инструментальную рациональность идей в политических проектах глобального управления в двадцать первом веке; ii) легитимацию и делегитимацию этих политических проектов в практиках, инициированных политиками, когда они защищают «добрые намерения» своих действий; iii) сопоставимые идеи региональных и мировых порядков, выраженные в политическом дискурсе и; iv) характер поиска политического порядка в глобальном управлении для дебатов в политической теории и международных отношениях о происхождении особых отношений, идентичности великой державы, внешней политики и беспорядка революционных изменений, все это в политической риторике.

Assessment Elements
- Seminar participation(2.5 *10): individual participation in class discussions [seminars 1-5; 10] and in the peer-review of case study presentations [seminars 6-9]
- PresentationIndividual in-class presentation of 20-25 minutes on one from a choice of seminar questions [seminars 1-5; 10]
- Case studygroup assignment requiring a written report of 2,500-3,000 words and an in-class oral presentation on one set question. All students involved in writing the report get the same grade.
- Case study revisionan individual written essay of 1,500-2,000 words where the student has to detail how they would revise their case study report to address the comments and criticism they received in written feedback from the instructor, and in oral feedback in the seminar presentation
