Course Syllabus

Abstract

Upon completing the course, student should: Know about: the influence of physical fitness systems on health enhancement, prevention of professional ailments and bad habits; methods for monitoring and assessing physical development and fitness; rules and methods for planning individual exercises for various purposes. Know how to: overcome artificial and natural obstacles, relying on various means of movement; engage in team forms of exercising creatively and cooperatively; follow a daily schedule that ensures a healthy lifestyle; explain the significance of endurance, self-possession and emotional state for maintaining a well-balanced psychophysical state. Possess skills (experience) in: applying aspects of physical culture in order to improve one’s resilience in dealing with various ambient conditions; organizing and carrying out individual, collective and family recreation and taking part in mass sports events; managing one’s psychophysical state; overseeing individual training plan with due consideration of one’s future career activities.

  • Section 1. Physical Culture in Professional Training of Students. Foundations of a Healthy Lifestyle and its Impact on Professional Activities
    Physical culture as a term and a social phenomenon, as well as its respective functions. Types of physical training. Physical education, sport, physical recreation and therapy: concepts, functions, key aspects of its social origins and what they mean in various phases of life. Goals, objectives, components, and foundations of the system for instilling individual physical culture. Federal Law “On Physical Culture and Sport in the Russian Federation”. Physical Culture as a taught course of higher professional education. Key provisions for the content and organization of physical training in institutions of higher learning. Anatomical, physiological and psychological characteristics of a student-aged person. General characteristics and dynamics in student’s performance ability during the academic year, day, semester (module), etc.; factors affecting such ability. Concepts of “lifestyle”, “healthy lifestyle” and “quality of life”. The components of a healthy life. Lack of physical exercising and hypokinesia. The role of physical exercises in the lives of contemporary people. Bad habits and their impact on personal and social well-being and health.
  • Medical/Biological Foundations for Instilling Individual Physical Culture in University Students
    The musculoskeletal system. The effects of physical training on the musculoskeletal system. Muscular system and its functions. The effects of physical training on the muscular system. Blood: its composition, volume and functions. Functions of red blood cells, white blood cells, and effects of muscular activity on them. Blood circulation: heart and vessels. Blood pressure. Features of blood circulation in skeletal muscles when subject to static or dynamic work. Breathing and its key parameters. Changes in breathing when exercising. Oxygen intake - demand and debt. Basics of a healthy diet. Hygiene and cold training. Biological rhythms and their impact on physical and mental state. Reserves of the body, their types and classification, and significance in physical culture and sport. Types of use and reserves of building strength, agility, endurance, dexterity, and flexibility.
  • General Theoretical Foundations for Instilling Physical Culture in University Students
    3.1. General Physical Education of Students The concept of physical education. Goals of the physical education of students. General and didactic principles related to the physical education system. Key and ancillary means of physical education. Classification of physical exercises. Movement knowledge and skills. Methods for teaching movement actions. Structure for teaching movement actions. Extent of physical exertion and related parameters of the physical exercise; rest periods and its variations. Zones of intensity and energy expenditure for different types of physical activities. Methods for developing movement capabilities. Key methods for improving human movement capabilities. Formats for developing physical exercise classes. Structure of teacher-led classes. Preparatory, core and concluding sections: significance and unique features. Teacher’s supervision during physical education classes. Types and significance of independent learning activities. Independent training activities. Content, planning, and organization of physical training sessions for various purposes. Self-control. Self-monitoring diary. Key methods for physical education in adults. 3.2. Special (sports) training for students The concept of sport and its classifications. Social, academic, and physiological significance of sports achievements. Principles for sports training. Physical, technical, tactical, intellectual, integrated forms for training athletes. Structures of sports training: macro-, meso-, and micro-cycles. Prestarting conditions and its regulation. Exhaustion, over-exhaustion, and over-training. Recovering physical performance. Pedagogical, medical-biological, and psychological means for recovery. Gender-related aspects of physical training. Medical and pedagogical supervision. Student sports: objectives, content and organization. Public sports organizations for students. Types of student competitions.
  • Professional/Applied Physical Training (PAPT) as a Special Approach to Developing Individual Physical Culture among University Students
    PAPT Concept. Job Profile. Professional self-concept. The psychological structure of professional activities. Labour groups. Typical ailments of white-collar workers. Preventing occupational diseases through key and auxiliary means of physical culture. Professional burnout. Key PAPT methods for white-collar workers: goals, means and methods. Types of PAPT (morning exercises, workplace exercises, workplace exercise breaks, workplace workouts): objectives, means, organization and key characteristics. Corporate sports.
  • PRACTICAL SECTION
    The practical section of the syllabus shall be primarily carried out in teacher-led classes: academic and training sessions, where all tasks related to fostering individual physical culture are undertaken. Learning tasks shall include: developing knowledge about physical exercise techniques, safety and spotting techniques for physical actions, ways of dosing and monitoring physical exercises, as well as enhancing and increasing the range of movement skills and competencies in students. To accomplish tasks related to physical education means to ensure a balanced development of the speed, coordination, flexibility, as well as priority development of general and specific endurance and strength in line with a student’s age, as well as improving one’s physique and enhancing the body’s functional and adaptive capabilities. Pedagogic tasks aimed at supporting sustained interest, motivation and need for regular exercise, both specially organized or done independently.

    Semester 1 – 15 study weeks; pass/fail exam eligibility criteria – attending 26 hours and scoring physical fitness standards; an advanced passing grade (exemption from an exam) – attending 40 hours. If attendance is 24 hours or less – additional examination.
  • Interim assessment (4 module)
    Semester 2 – 22 study weeks; pass/fail exam eligibility criteria – attending 38 hours and scoring physical fitness standards; an advanced passing grade (exemption from an exam) – attending 50 hours. If attendance is 36 hours or less – additional examination
