Аннотация

This syllabus establishes the requirements for the knowledge and skills, and defines the content of the course and the forms of evaluation for 37.06.01 Psychological Sciences, research and pedagogy-oriented programmes for PhD-students: General psychology, Personality Psychology and History of Psychology; Psychophysiology; Social Psychology. The programme is designed for lecturer and PhD-students within 37.06.01 Psychological Sciences, research and pedagogy-oriented programmes for PhD-students: General psychology, Personality Psychology and History of Psychology; Psychophysiology; Social Psychology.

  • Upon successful completion of the course, the PhD students will be able to produce texts satisfying the standards of academic English and American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. They will know the main principles of organization of academic types of writing, the existing systems of style and reference, etc. They will develop appropriate professional writing and presentation skills. The course Academic Writing in English and Presentation Skills targets PhD-students in psychology and is aimed at developing academic writing and presentation skills that are necessary for publishing articles and teaching in the English-speaking academic environment.

  • Can interpret and critically evaluate a variety of academic texts in English in the field of psychology (book report, literature review, abstract, research paper);
  • Can develop a clear and coherent argument on their research topic
  • Can identify and correctly target the potential audience by choosing appropriate style, vocabulary, and level of formality
  • Can identify and implement the basic writing strategies and standards of English academic writing in the styles of an abstract and research paper, including argumentation structure, psychological data presentation, compositional, rhetoric, stylistic, verbal, and grammatical devices
  • Has developed efficient planning, pre-writing, drafting, and editing techniques;
  • Knows design and layout skills suitable for graphs, presentations, posters and international journals

  • General issues in Academic Writing
    Thematic overview of the course and research area is presented as well as auditory classes’ process, homework structure, and methods of assessment are explained. Students choose topics they will responsible for and form workgroups. Students’ and teacher’s expectations are discussed.
  • Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation
    Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation: different structural elements of academic text types: formal vocabulary and grammatical constructions, linking words, connectors, definitions, evaluative language, openings and closings.
  • APA style sheet
    APA style sheet: how to use using American Psychological Association style sheet and bibliography format APA versus MLA etc.
  • Abstract writing
    Abstract writing: focus on problem presentation, methods, results and conclusions.
  • Research paper: planning, pre-writing, intro, presentation of results, discussion
    Research paper: planning, pre-writing, intro, presentation of results, discussion. Focus on argumentation structure and composition – formulating the problem, literature overview, citing sources, creating a niche for the research project, discussion, methods, data, results.
  • Preparation of Poster and Oral Report
    Preparation of Poster and Oral Report. Design a poster presentation of research suitable for an international conference with focus on audience, research goals, data, conclusions, contributions to the field.
  • Conclusions
    Conclusions: pre-writing and planning techniques, including visual organization of ideas: brainstorming, clustering, listing; drafting, revising, and proof-reading techniques as practiced through peer review and self-editing; developing coherent and clear argumentation and presentation of the results.
