Course Syllabus

Abstract

Global Strategy is concerned with effective strategic, organizational, and interpersonal management in a dynamic global environment. This course will focus on the strategic and organizational challenges involved in managing activities of multinational companies across borders. The following topics will be considered from a strategic perspective: the economic, political, legal, and technological environment affecting globalization choices; the formulation and implementation of strategy from organizational and market perspectives; organization of multinational enterprises; entry mode choice of multinational enterprises and human resources management staffing, training, and compensation issues.

  • The course seeks to address the following key questions in global strategy: Why do firms go abroad? Where and when to locate? What is “going global”? How to execute global strategies? How to organize and manage multinational companies? How to choose modes of entry into global markets?

  • - Understanding the strategic choices companies face when going global, and the trade-offs implied in each internationalization strategy

  • non-blocking Class discussion and participation
    30% of total assesment weight. Conceptual material will be illustrated and applied to the “real world” through rigorous class discussion and exercises. Most weeks we will carry out discussions which apply the tools or frameworks we have studied that week to real-world examples. This will include exercises where you will have to find examples of real-world companies to illustrate the class concepts, after which we will have in-class discussions of these examples.
