Course Syllabus

Abstract

This advanced level Chinese language course (Advanced Course) is designed for non-native learners of Chinese who have taken approximately three years of regularly paced college-level Chinese. It aims to acquire and improve skills in the main types of translation, considering the specifics of intercultural communication. The overall goal of this course is to bring students’ Chinese proficiency to an advanced level and help them develop an active command of authentic reading materials. At the end of the course students will achieve C1 level according to the CEFR.

  • to improve basic direct and reverse translation techniques, considering the specifics of intercultural and inter language communication;
  • to improve and systematize Chinese language skills by means of comparing the systems of the original language and the language of written translation;
  • to develop skills and proficiency in the main types of translation;
  • to enhance knowledge in linguistic and regional studies on the basis of topical issues of our times.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students learn basic vocabulary related to geography of China and population. Students have understanding of the regions of China: natural (physical) settings, socio-economic regions, and recasting regions. Students have listening skills of authentic foreign language speech within the studied topics.
  • Students have listening skills of authentic foreign language speech within the studied topics, transmitted by various channels (from a live voice to audio and video recordings); know how to choose and adequately use the word depending on the context within the studied topics.
  • Students have the ability to select and apply adequate translation strategies in accordance with the type of translation. Students are able to use the basic translation models and translation transformations when analyzing the translation process and its results.
  • Students can recognize speech levels: official, unofficial, neutral, etc. Students are able to recognize linguistic markers of social relations and use them.

  • Topic 1. Geographical location and population.
    1) Geographical location Active vocabulary: geographical places, regions, weather and climate, humidity etc. 2) Population Active vocabulary: population, religions, bilingualism etc. Texts like “科威特国”, “斯洛伐克共和国”.
  • Topic 2. State and Constitution
    Active vocabulary: state, republic, federation, confederation etc. Texts like “The State Duma consists of 450 deputies”, “国体和政体”.
  • Topic 3. Economics
    Active vocabulary: GDP, inflation, devaluation, digital economy etc. Texts like “国民经济”,“美国的第三产业”.
  • Topic 4. Politics and diplomacy
    1) Diplomatic relations, international relations Active vocabulary: embassy, consulate, credentials, note, protest, message, etc. Texts like “欧洲安全与合作会议”。 2) Public organizations Active vocabulary: idea, association, front, coalition, foundation, platform, logo etc. Texts of the type "国际组织", “联合国”。

    During the semester there are grades for oral and written work. These grades are entered into the electronic journal into the rows “written grade” and “oral grade”. Besides these grades, students have several written and oral tests during the semester. The results of these tests are also entered into the electronic journal. The overall weight of tests is higher than the weight of general grades, at the same time, the overall weight of the written work is higher than of oral work. All the grades are whole numbers between 0 and 10. If the calculated grade turns out to be fractional, it is rounded to the whole number. Decimals below 0,5 are rounded down, decimals over 0,5 are rounded up.
