Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course explores the crucial role of non-governmental organizations in today's world, examining their economic and political significance. It delves into the critical evaluation of interactions between NGOs, the state, and businesses in the joint creation of people's welfare. The course's readings and discussions help students develop their ability to form well-reasoned opinions about how the nonprofit sector affects laws and procedures in various countries.
Learning Objectives
- The course delves into theoretical principles that elucidate the multifaceted nature of welfare production and the interplay between NGOs and other societal actors, such as government bodies and business entities.
- It seeks to cultivate skills for applying these theories to address specific social challenges and evaluate the societal consequences of decisions.
- It equips students to critically assess situations, dissect viable options, and formulate proposals to enhance the impact of NGOs and other third sector orrganizations on improving the lives of citizens.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- To be able to argue the judgments pro and contra corporate social policy based on logics and facts
- To be able to distinguish and analyze the main aspects of social policy and/ or nongovernmental non-profit organizations
- To have basic academic skills, such as collecting, analyzing and logically presenting information and data on a certain topic, participating in a group discussion, writing an essay, making a presentation, etc.
- To know basic methods of obtaining empirical knowledge about social phenomena, providing opportunities for their use in any subject area of social science
- Development of a general idea of the object of the course, its main functions, and its impact on the issues of development
- Contributes to identification the place of NGOs and the third sector organizations in a complex system of political and economic relations of a modern society. Helps to distinguish different kinds of NGOs in cross-sector interactions
- To realize the activities of organizations in their complexity and diversity; to be ready to form recommendations for NGOs on hoe to resist unwanted influences
- Get value out of academic literature on the theory of third sector (of presumably "western" origin) and be ready to apply it to practical solutions in the national context of student's native countries
Course Contents
- The welfare "triangle" and the welfare state: the role of three societal actors in the welfare production
- Non-Governmental Organizations and Development: Content, Concepts and PracticeStudents learn about the material by becoming familiar with scientific articles, normative acts, and practices of NGOs. Students prepare their presentations in class on the basis of the websites of specific organizations (NGOs) in their countries.
