Course Syllabus
Abstract
Political Science is an optional one-semester course for second-year students of the HSE program. The course is taught in English and introduces students to key topics in political science with a focus on comparative politics and current empirical research.
Learning Objectives
- introduce students to the core areas of contemporary political science, with a focus on comparative politics, political regimes, institutions, and political behavior
- familiarize students with the principal conceptual and methodological approaches in the discipline, from classical normative theory and behavioralism to rational choice and new institutionalism
- develop the ability to link theoretical debates on power, the state, democracy and non-democracy, ideologies, and constitutional design with current empirical research and major democracy and governance indices
- equip students to critically read state-of-the-art research, to assess how key concepts (democracy, state capacity, governance, etc.) are operationalized and measured, and to apply empirical evidence to concrete country cases and contemporary political processes
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Assess major opportunities and challenges to democratic and non-democratic politics created by social media
- Assess the role of constitutional design for political outcomes
- Describe key theories of the state in political science and their relation to empirical research on state capacity
- Differenciate between different types of non-democratic regimes and explain the roles of different institutions in these regimes
- Evaluate the role of parties in different national contexts and the role of the party system
- Explain how people can make voting decisions and how to study this empirically
- Explain the fundamental principles of classical and new forms of ideologies
- Explain what democracy is and how it can be measured
- Explain why and how people participation in political protests
- Outline key differences in major approaches to studying politics
- Outline major types of electoral systems and understand the role of elections in democratic and non-democratic regimes
