Course Syllabus
Abstract
Global and comparative history aims to familiarize the students with the main events of global history of the modern period (long nineteenth century) and current methodology of research of global and comparative history. The main argument of the class is that global context matters and no domestic history should be explained just from within.
Learning Objectives
- This course aims at familiarising the students with the main events of global history of the modern period (long nineteenth century).
- The course also aims at getting students acquainted with methodology of global and comparative history, its advantages, drawbacks, and perspectives.

- When and where was the nineteenth century?
- The end of the old regimes and its global dimension: North America.
- The end of the old regimes and its global dimension: France.
- The end of the old regimes and its global dimension: Central and South America.
- Industrial revolution.

Assessment Elements
- Seminar discussionsSeminars are planned as weekly online discussions of assigned readings, which will complement the lectures and explore a given topic in in a more comprehensive way. The discussions will be based around the focus questions, provided to students to reflect upon in advance.
- PresentationStudents’ in-class presentations necessarily have to be based on academic and historical literature, well-structured (with an introduction, main part and conclusion) and oriented upon the audience. Power Point or .pdf presentations are recommended to be used to make it easier for the audience to stay engaged and involved during the talk. Time limit for the presentation is 15 minutes.
- Exam essayThe exam consists of a home written essay.
- MidtermMidterm lasts for a maximum of 80 minutes, is conducted offline, with no books, notes, or electronic devices allowed. Any cheating or attempt of cheating will result in a removal of a student from a room and a zero grade. Midterm consists of a test (10 questions – 0,7 points each) and a mini-essay (3 points). Maximum grade: 10.
