Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed to provide students majoring in economics a broad overview of the subject of management. The course exposes students to the theories, principles, and practices that are important for successful management of organizations today. Topics include management theory and history; elements of strategic planning, organizational culture and structure; leadership; motivation; communication; change as well as managing individual and teams. Students develop appreciation for different aspects of organizational life and the challenging tasks and roles of managers at different levels of organizations. The course combines lectures and interactive seminars to promote student critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The course assignments are based on current literature in management and on-line resources and include individual and group work.

  • Name main periods in the development of management as an academic discipline and as a field of practice;
  • Identify roles and functions of the manager in today’s organizations;
  • Explain the influence of diverse contexts on organizational practices;
  • Identify main components of strategic planning and goal-setting;
  • Compare types of organizations structure;
  • Identify practices of effective decision-making, conflict management, and communication, both interpersonal and across the organization;
  • Discuss main challenges and solutions to managing teams and individual employees;
  • Explain approaches to leading and motivating individuals and teams;
  • Define organizational culture and discuss managerial tools for its development and maintenance;
  • Identify challenges of and approaches to the implementation of an organization change and innovation;
  • Develop and manage processes for getting work done effectively;
  • Set and articulate goals and objectives based on needs assessment;
  • Identify practices for effective team-building and team management;
  • Apply their knowledge to analyze problems and cases related to management of organizations internationally today;

  • non-blocking Managing Organizational Change - Self-directed group work
    Managing Organizational Change is an activity that provides students an opportunity to gain experience of working in agile teams to explore challenges companies face when managing an organizational change. Students identify a company that is undergoing an organizational change, collect information from primary and secondary sources on change management, analyze and critique the organization’s approach to change implementation, and provide a set of solutions to improve the effectiveness of change management in this company. The use of Trello is mandatory for assignment completion. Students have four weeks to complete the assignment. Additional details, deadlines, and evaluation criteria will be provided by the instructor. This assignment is due seminar #5.
  • non-blocking Managing Team Performance - self-directed group activity
    8. Managing Team Performance is an activity that provides students an opportunity to analyze a challenge their team faced through the lens of management theory. In this assignment, a challenge is (a) an issue faced by the team (b) that is ongoing or that happened once and/but (c) has had a long-lasting impact on team productivity, morale, communication, motivation, or other team-level factor/process, and (d) requires a set of solutions to be resolved. Students apply their knowledge of the coursework to address the specific challenge. Additional details, deadlines, and evaluation criteria will be provided by the instructor. This assignment is due seminar #8.

    This is one multiple-choice, yes/no, and fill in the blanks type of quiz given in an electronic format. The quiz consists of 10 questions. The quiz includes material included in class activities (lectures, seminars, homework) and in the textbook prior to the quiz. Students complete the quiz individually. Students have 10 minutes to complete the quiz.

    Homework includes a variety of individual and group assignments given to complete at home.
  • blocking Exam
    This is a multiple-choice, yes/no, and fill in the blanks type of exam given in an electronic format during the finals week. The exam includes key concepts covered from the beginning of the course. Students take this exam individually.
