Course Syllabus
Abstract
“Second foreign language (Chinese)” is a two-year course delivered in English for the second-year and third-year students. The course is aimed at acquirement basic knowledge and competences of modern Chinese language, including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course. The aim of studying is also to enable students to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese. It aims to foster intercultural competence and provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in Chinese-speaking environments, both orally and in writing. Additionally, the study of a second foreign language can enhance cognitive abilities, improve memory and problem-solving skills, and broaden cultural horizons. Prerequisites for this discipline include the completion of the introductory course (second year of the program) or an equivalent proficiency level in Chinese (HSK 1-2).
Learning Objectives
- The course is aimed at acquirement basic knowledge and competences of modern Chinese language, including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- ULO8: Able to efficiently communicate based on the goals and communication situations
- Uses phonetic, vocabulary and the necessary grammar on the topic;
- Demonstrates the ability to participate in the organization and management of activities in Chinese and to make management decisions in the professional field.
- Carries out business communication in oral form using Chinese.
- Describes and discusses social and cultural phenomena, using appropriate terms and concepts in Chinese.
- Organizes a discussion: establish communication and react, ask for a person and respond, ask to start a story, introduce a story topic, organize information, interrupt.
- Expresses opinions, attitudes and knowledge: argue, express and justify an opinion, agree, disagree, evaluate an idea and a fact, assess relationships, express the cause, consequence and purpose, difficulty, express and defend our abilities, generalize.
- Writes simple essays on a specified topic including business communication and international policy in Chinese.
- Demonstrates the necessary communication skills at the A1 level (1st year)/A2 level (2nd year), B1 level (3rd year).
- Expresses tastes, desires and emotions: talk about tastes, preferences and feelings, intentions and projects, express interest, surprise, disgust and gratefulness, physical sensations, pain or annoyance.
- Influences the interlocutor: invite, get someone’s attention, give instructions and advice, make recommendations, express prohibition.

Assessment Elements
- HomeworkAverage result of all home assignments including handwriting of radicals and characters, exercises on knowledge of radicals and characters, lexical and grammatical exercises and translations of sentences; compositions.
- In-class participationAverage result of all kinds of class participation: control reading of syllables/ words/ sentences/ tongue twisters/ texts; reading texts and answering questions/ making up situational dialogues
- TestsAverage result of all modular tests and dictations of radicals and characters. In modular 4 Modular Test is conducted remotely on LMS platform. In modular 4 dictations are replaced by tests in LMS.
- ExamExam results including oral part and written part . The exam is conducted in oral and written forms (a monologue on a topic and translation of sentences from Chinese and into Chinese). A student should attend the exam according to the schedule sent by a teacher before the exam. Students take an oral part first. The written part should be taken immediately after the oral part in synchronous mode. The retake procedure is similar to the exam procedure and involves the use of more complicated tasks.
