Course Syllabus

Abstract

The discipline refers to the variable educational tracks offered to Bachelor’s degree students as an option while they master the optional course of English in accordance with the Concept of Development of English-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students. This course is designed for the second-year students who study Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Logistics&SCM) and intend to communicate effectively in English in their workplace. It allows for the personalization of the learning experience with a structured modular approach that gives flexibility to focus on specific needs and learning outcomes. Having completed the course, the students will learn basic professional terminology and vocabulary related to commercial activities, and acquire oral and written skills in the field of business communication. Role-playing games involving conversations, business correspondence, making presentations at business meetings, as well as case studies, form and develop students' business communication skills in a meaningful and authentic professional context.

  • The main goal of mastering the course is to develop and improve the professional communication skills in Logistics&SCM. To achieve this goal the following tasks are being solved: to familiarize students with the specific vocabulary used in main areas of Logistics&SCM, such as stock management, warehousing, transportation, distribution, etc.; to build the basic skills of argumentative communication in English and successful representation of intentions and results to ensure the maximum range and authenticity of business content; to master presentation agility and fluency by training in representing and discussing various topics concerning Logistics&SCM; to develop skills in business correspondence and documentation used in Logistics&SCM.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Written assesment
    Students fulfill the tasks of creating emails in the business context, documentation in Logisctic and SCM, reviews of business articles. They also complete vocabulary tests after each unit. The elements of written assessment can be retaken only with the document proving the cause of absence and approved by the teacher. Another attempt can be given to a student during 10 working days after returning back to the study.
  • non-blocking Oral-assessment
    During the course students make a detailed, formal, evidence-based argument in a presentation or discussion using linguistically complex language; carry out an effective, fluent interview, spontaneously following up on interesting replies; summarise findings in a work-related review using appropriate language and style; use persuasive language to convince others to agree with their recommended course of action during a discussion.
  • non-blocking Independent work assessment
    Independent work includes activities that students do at home, in the classroom and online work. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken. The overall grade for self-directed work is assessed as an arithmetical mean of scores for all the tasks assigned during the course. They may include such items as: -Accomplishment of home tasks -Viewing videos and/or listening to lectures on the Internet and doing the accompanying tasks as assigned by the teacher -Preparing for role-plays, negotiations, presentations, discussions -Analysing a case-study -Working on a project and preparing results presentations Assessment criteria for self-directed work : -the level of mastering the educational material -Creativity -Information processing depth - registration of the material in accordance with the requirements of the standard -Meeting deadlines. Grading scale: 10 =100 - 96%, 9=95 - 91%, 8=90 - 86%, 7 = 85 - 78%, 6 =77 - 71%, 5= 70 - 61%, 4 = 60 - 51%, 3 = 50 - 36%, 2 = 35 - 21%, 1 = 20 - 1 %, 0 = 0%.
  • non-blocking Final Assessment
    The interim exam is taken 10 days prior to the session week of the 3 module and lasts 80 minutes. The exam consists of three parts: Reading (10 tasks), Listening (10 tasks) and Writing (a review). Final assessment is aimed at checking whether the student can demonstrate the acquisition of the learning objectives set. The release of examination papers: during the session. Retaking exams: till the 15th of October 2022. Grading formula: L*0,3+R*0,3 +W*0,4 = 10.
