Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is dedicated to most prominent world history episodes and how they were reflected on the canvases by the artists. During the seminars we are going to talk about Russian and European rulling dinasties, wars and the Crusades, rises and falls of the great cities and empires, world famouse fires and floods, the Black Death and other outstanding chronological events. The research seminar includes the topics in context of which we will get aquanted with the world known paintings and their creators. We will try to be very attentive to the details on the pieces of arts like emotions and feelings, clothes and jewelries, and other symbols and smaller details non-obvious from the first sight. For interim control assessment you will be offered to fulfill the tests and to prepare a presentation on one of the chosen topics.

  • to enhance cultural awareness and competence;
  • to study art heritage and history of Russia, Italy, France, Spain etc. (their geography, mythology, cultural settings, and everyday life) on the world famous canvases;
  • to reflect upon, and respond to a range of key historical issues (significant events, data of the given period, painted portraits of rulers and their family members, painters’ biographies, etc.);
  • to know how to read a painting, the main terms of painting, styles and genres;
  • to develop lifelong knowledge and skills which will enable students to apply their knowledge in professional, scientific, and interpersonal communication in the multi-cultural world of today;
  • o further develop students’ critical thinking skills in the context of cultural and historical studies.
