Course Syllabus

Abstract

Family business is the most common business form in the world and especially in Asian countries. This course will explore the unique challenges and opportunities in the leadership and management of Asian family businesses in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The course will shed light on unique challenges in managing and growing the business, while nurturing family and stakeholder relationships. The course will help students to understand differences in generations, ownership structures, strategies for sustainable growth. Additionally the course will discover uniqueness of family businesses, succession, governance, working with non-family managers, leadership, and entrepreneurship inside of family businesses. The course is beneficial for students who plan to work in/ with family-owned businesses in the future, as most companies in Asia are family-owned. The course provides models and theories for understanding on what the family business is all about and also gives the students lots of opportunities to learn wisdom and secrets for operating businesses and explore the reasons for the sustainability.
