Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is an adaptation of the university-wide course «Digital Literacy»; specifically for students of the bachelor program «International Bachelor's in Business and Economics»; (in English). Practice-oriented course, the objectives of which are: the development of the ability to conduct research in the field of management, the acquisition of knowledge about modern information technologies used to conduct research, the acquisition of knowledge about working in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint and the development of skills for searching and processing information.

  • non-blocking Learning the online course
    The course "Digital Literacy" is held on the internal NRU HSE [URL: online.hse.ru]. Course is devoted to the key topics of digital litercay such as computer literacy, media literacy, security in the Internet and baisc approaches to data processing in text, media and tabular processors etc. The grade for the discipline is set in accordance with the assessment formula for all passed control elements.
  • non-blocking Test 1
    The test is held in a computer class on a PC in the format of practical assignments using the appropriate software (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel). The test consists of 10 practical exercises in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel. The test duration is 60 minutes. Cheating is strictly prohibited during the tests (using mobile devices, paper materials, cheat sheets, connecting to the Internet / local network, talking with other students, and viewing another screen or recordings). If the facts of cheating are revealed, the student is removed from the classroom ahead of schedule and receives 0 (zero) points for a specific test.
  • non-blocking Test 2
    This test checks student’s ability to use intermediate techniques in processing data in tabular from. The test is held in a computer class on a PC in the format of practical assignments using the appropriate software (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel). The test consists of 10 practical exercises in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel. The test duration is 60 minutes. Cheating is strictly prohibited during the tests (using mobile devices, paper materials, cheat sheets, connecting to the Internet / local network, talking with other students, and viewing another screen or recordings). If the facts of cheating are revealed, the student is removed from the classroom ahead of schedule and receives 0 (zero) points for a specific test.

    This test checks student’s ability to use advanced techniques in processing data. The test is held in a computer class on a PC in the format of practical assignments using the appropriate software (MS Excel). The test consists of 10 practical exercises in MS Excel. The test duration is 60 minutes. Cheating is strictly prohibited during the tests (using mobile devices, paper materials, cheat sheets, connecting to the Internet / local network, talking with other students, and viewing another screen or recordings).   • non-blocking Research Project
    This method of control checks the ability of students to apply in practice the knowledge gained during the online course and face-to-face seminars in the context of independent research team-work. The work is carried out in project groups (2-3 students of one seminar group). As a result, a well-structured analytical presentation of the project is expected, demonstrating convincing evidence and general academic literacy of the student. Students define a framework, major goals, tasks, and desirable results for a project (in accordance with basic norms of logical reasoning and common sense). Basically, this project may be a draft of course paper (e.g. data collection and quantitative analysis), a business plan for a virtual company, a supplementary analytical dashboard for any practical tasks and projects related to student(s) current courses, internships, etc. Each project should include: - In MS Word. An abstract of the research project (max. ~ 500 words). Samples of abstracts: https://writing.wisc.edu/handbook/assignments/writing-an-abstract-for-your-research-paper/ + Bibliography of used sources (APA style). - In PowerPoint. An interactive presentation (max. 10 slides) which should include the following information: brief overview (main goals, tasks, desirable results etc.), teamwork distribution, project results. - In Excel. It is the main part which reflects each seminar's subjects (MS Excel functions and tools). In the main part, students should apply MS Excel functions and tools to pre-defined goals and tasks to reach any valuable results within the overall framework of the project (e.g. hypothesis check, profit/loss balance, data visualization etc.).
  • non-blocking Final Exam
    The exam is held in a computer class on a PC in the format of practical assignments using the appropriate software (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel). The exam consists of 10 practical exercises in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel. The exam duration is 80 minutes. Cheating is strictly prohibited during the tests (using mobile devices, paper materials, cheat sheets, connecting to the Internet / local network, talking with other students, and viewing another screen or recordings). If the facts of cheating are revealed, the student is removed from the classroom ahead of schedule and receives 0 (zero) points for a specific test.
