Course Syllabus

Abstract

Our society is facing the global climate and social challenges. To deal with them we need to carry out prompt and coordinated actions. In this regard, Sustainable Development (ESG) trends are being formed, including the carbon neutrality of the economy, the use of alternative energy, etc. This course is aimed on developing more profound knowledge and critical thinking skills required to work with ESG trends in a variety of strategic ways and in a variety of legal scenarios. In this course, you will explore the theoretical foundations upon which modern-day ESG has been built. You will focus on understanding the climate and social changes and the risks and opportunities that it creates for businesses in the 21st century. All educational material will be presented through Law & Economics and Law & Policy doctrines as well as through particular country specifics. By the end of this course, you will have a thorough understanding of why and how to work with ESG doctrine in CIS region. Students must gain knowledge on: • Global Sustainable Development (ESG) doctrine, including it’s historical, geopolitical and legal aspects; • Guidelines of how and under what circumstances to apply efficiently Global Sustainable Development (ESG) doctrine in corporate and state sectors. Skills and abilities: • to understand the basic concept of Sustainable Development Goals and to know their more detailed contents; • to understand how to carry out ESG-transformation in stages, what is expected from legal counsel at each stage; • practical abilities to research relevant sources, including international and Russian & CIS law and doctrine with respect to ESG; • to evaluate ESG maturity. Students should gain the following competences: • ability to work with information (search, evaluate, use information, necessary for fulfilment of academic and professional tasks, from various sources, including application of the systematic approach); • ability to search, analyze, and work with relevant information by using the juridical, comparative and other specific methods; • ability to communicate effectively and present ideas plainly; • Writing skills.

  • The course is aimed on delivering necessary Law & Economics and Law & Policy competencies to develop a basic ESG-strategy that would simultaneously take into account (1) the economic priorities of a particular stakeholder, and (2) the need to achieve key indicators of Sustainable Development (ESG) in general.

    Students will prepare (in a group) a part of the Stakeholder map /part of the Strategy of ESG transformation in the field of ESG for a particular company.
  • non-blocking Final test: oral exam
    Exam for the course will be set up as an verbal face-to-face interview.
