Course Syllabus

Abstract

This discipline refers to various educational trajectories offered to students of the bachelor's and master's programs in mastering the optional English course in accordance with the Concept for the Development of English-Language Communicative Competence of Students of the Higher School of Economics (https://www.hse.ru/docs/381549301.html.). The aim of this course is to prepare students for the English for Special Purposes program in the second semester of their first year. The course is structured in such a way as to enable students to master a range of linguistic and text-analytical skills necessary for interpreting and discussing literary and secondary literary sources. Students master basic (B2-C1) linguistic, communication, writing, analytical skills, master literary and related vocabulary, and at the end of the semester prepare a presentation on philological topics.

  • • To develop standard English language skills corresponding to B2-C1 competencies, to prepare for the use of these skills in an English-speaking formal environment. • To equip students with the ability to use literary vocabulary and perceive it in the text, to prepare them for further activities within the framework of the bachelor's program in Philology. • To teach students how to prepare and defend individual presentations in English related to their future academic activities.

  • present conversational dialogue skills on general and literary topics, learn monologue and dialogue skills in an exam format similar to IELTS
  • prepare and present their own research or topic related to literature in the format of a 10-minute presentation with discussion and answers to questions, learn to present information competently

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Written assessment
    Written assessment includes one reading test, one listening test, five vocabulary and grammar tests and one written work. The test tasks can be of different types. The elements of written assessment cannot be retaken. Written assessment is conducted in the classroom and cannot be part of homework.
  • non-blocking Independent work
    Independent work includes activities that students do at home or in the classroom. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken. Independent work includes two listening tasks that are done in Smart LMS. Grading scale: Grade 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 % fully completed tasks at home/in the classroom/online work 100 - 96% 95 - 91% 90 - 86% 85 - 78% 77 - 71% 70 - 61% 60 - 51% 50 - 36% 35 - 21% 20 - 1 % 0% A fully completed task means that an assigned task meets the deadline and all the requirements.
  • non-blocking Oral Assessment
    During the 1st and the 2nd modules each student should make 1 presentation on any academic topic connected to the book discussed in the seminars, take an active part in 2 discussions and 2 dialogues.
  • non-blocking Final Assessment
    The interim exam lasts 70 minutes. The exam is a written paper-and-pen test and is aimed at checking whether the student can demonstrate the acquisition of the learning objectives set. The exam consists of two parts, i.e. Listening (L) and Writing (W) that weigh 50% and 50% respectively in the total mark for the exam: Listening (L): Listen to the text ONCE and complete the tasks. Max. 10 points. Writing (W): Read the text. Write a summary on the text you have read. A student should write a 150-word summary. Students have no more than 20 minutes to complete the Listening (L) part and 50 minutes to complete the Writing (W) part. Grading formula: L*0,5 + W*0,5 = 10 The actual scores for Listening are turned into percentages which are tuned into a final mark out of 10 points. Grading scale: 10 =100 - 96%, 9=95 - 91%, 8=90 - 86%, 7 = 85 - 78%, 6 =77 - 71%, 5= 70 - 61%, 4 = 60 - 51%, 3 = 50 - 36%, 2 = 35 - 21%, 1 = 20 - 1 %, 0 = 0%. Writing is assessed against the criteria. Period of FA: 10 days prior to the 2nd module’s session. The release of examination papers: during the session. Retaking exams: till the 15th of February 2023. Time limit: 70 minutes online/offline. The structure of the exam: 1. Listening (L): Listen to the text ONCE and complete the tasks. Max. 10 points. Students have no more than 20 minutes to complete the Listening (L) part. 2. Writing (W) Read the text. Write a summary on the text you have read. A student should write a 150-word summary. Students have 50 minutes to complete the Writing (W) part.
