Course Syllabus
Abstract
In English, there is a subtle difference, hard to convey in other languages, between the terms romance and novel, finally crystallized by the late 18th century. The first term implies an “archaic” prose narrative, built around amorous and heroic deeds performed in a legendary or idealized setting. The second implies that the narrative describes a recognizable everyday reality with some degree of realism, and is the standard designation of the genre in modern English.
The suggested course traces
* how the vision of the genre and function of narrative prose evolved from the late Middle Ages to the late Enlightenment;
* what different forms and styles are combined under the label of either romance or novel;
* what motives, images and traditions that originated in English-language prose in the Early Modern era endure up to this day.

Expected Learning Outcomes
- Be able to determine the influence of the English Civil War and Glorious Revolution on the political life of England;
- Students will be able to consolidate their reading in their research area by writing an annotated bibliography and /or literature review
- To know key terms and personalities related to British literature of the Enlightenment; to read critically, comprehend, and produce clear, informed, independent opinions and judgements on the assigned Key Text(s).
- The student is familiar with the debate on Arthurian romance
- The student is familiar with the debate on Civil War and Restoration prose
- The student is familiar with the state of Englightenment debate

- Проектная работаСмысл предлагаемого задания заключается в том, чтобы научиться аналитически и критически соотносить литературную теорию и художественную практику, прямые высказывания писателей и образы, созданные в литературном произведении. Ваша задача: 1) выберете два-четыре предложенных манифестов (блок) из книги «Литературные манифесты западноевропейских классицистов», внимательно их прочитайте, при необходимости сделайте конспект, зафиксировав основные аспекты проблематики. Перечень текстов и блоков дан ниже, сама книга – в приложении. 2) Найдите основную информацию об авторе (авторах) и произведении (произведениях) своего блока, зафиксируйте значимые фактические детали и подробности. 3) сравните манифесты с самостоятельно выбранными несколькими художественными произведениями класицизма, подкрепляющими (а возможно, опровергающими или корректирующими) теорию при создании художественного (поэтического, прозаического или драматического) образа. 4) Очертите проблемное поле и зафиксируйте ключевые тезисы. Продумайте, какие исследовательские вопросы, связанные с темой проекта, могут быть поставлены именно на вашем материале. Придумайте содержательное название для своего блока и составьте список проблемных вопросов. 5) На основе вынесенных в ридер теоретических фрагментов подтвердите основные тезисы вашего выступления примерами из текста. Включите в свой ответ элементы анализа текста! (без анализа текста оценка будет существенно снижена!)
