Course Syllabus

Abstract

The word theoretical in the name of the course is somewhat misleading, and the name should properly be just English Grammar, but the word has survived since the early days of the course and since then certain changes have occurred which suggest that it should be removed. The course offered is the natural continuation of the course of Practical English Grammar. Its goal, however, is not merely to lay down the rules, but rather to describe the structure of the English language from the word to the text, to show how the language operated. On the one hand, the student is expected to have mastered the practical grammar of English at approximately the C1/C2 level, on the other hand, the student need have no fear if something has been forgotten. After all, one never stops learning. The course “Theoretical Stylistics” focuses on the system of expressive resources and stylistic devices of the English language in line with the effects achieved. Students will develop their skills of stylistic analysis viewing the text as a unity of semantic, functional, structural, and stylistic elements. Within the format of the course, students learn to analyze and create texts belonging to different functional styles. Seminars offer a variety of practical exercises and creative work. The course contains novel elements - juxtaposition of style and discourse analyses; elements of narratological analysis of emotive prose. Acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills should be applied in the process of writing the graduation paper.
