Course Syllabus
Abstract
Everyday Life in Middle Ages is a one-semester basic introductory course on different social, mental and religious aspects of the everyday life in Medieval Europe (with a special focus on the British Isles). This course is meant to give students a broad look at the development of social strata from both the lowest and the highest classes. Attention will be given, for example, to early medieval farmers, their ways of survival and their mentality. This course is also meant to give a broad overview of several aspects of Medieval European civilisation which may include the following: culture, art forms, religion, technology, philosophy, law, specific features of society and contributions to modern times.
Learning Objectives
- This course aims to familiarize students with basic developments in the everyday life according to a number of early medieval sources (Hiberno-Latin, Irish, Welsh and Breton). Different regional features will be compared in the period between the fifth and eleventh centuries. Both comparative approach and literary analysis are crucial in extensive reading of the relevant sources for this course. Besides, this course will deal with local and external influences on early medieval societies, the different ways how Christianity was introduced and practiced in these countries, and the impact of the Viking invasions. We will also address issues related to the so-called insular isolationism, archaic features vs. innovations, pagan past and Christian present.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students are expected to demonstrate good knowledge of medieval mentalities and different types of human behaviour determined by belief systems and paradigm shift in the above-mentioned beliefs.
- Students who will successfully complete the course will be equipped with an adequate knowledge and skills to pursue their studies in British, Irish and European history. By this token, the students who are planning to continue their studies and to enroll into MA and Ph.D. programs are the most welcome.
- Students will acquire a systemic understanding of basic religious and mental factors influencing social, political and cultural evolution of the early medieval society. They will be able to form solid and reasonable judgements in a range of specific questions in history of the British Isles and the adjacent regions. They will evaluate critically key concepts and comparative approaches as far as these European regions are concerned.
- This course will develop students’ skills to analyse critically a range of problems related to everyday life in Middle Ages, religious and social history, as well as its mythological background and substratum, of the above-mentioned regions using appropriate theoretical and historical perspectives.

- Breton saints, their lives and miracles
- A guest-house and its owner: hospitality in early Ireland
Assessment Elements
- Term essay (10 000 characters)Its topic should be related to the programme of our course and will be chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor; students could take one of subjects of our class discussion
