Abstract

In this course, you will learn how to make more sound judgments about the information presented to you in any format and make more informed decisions about what to do with that information. You will be examining texts of different genres: commercials, social media comments, films, interviews with famous bloggers, etc., in order to analyze how logical fallacies, rhetoric, lazy thinking, or, on the contrary, good examples of deductive and inductive reasoning are used in them. In Unit 1, you will learn how to evaluate information that could be misleading or biased and build immunity to it. The next unit will focus on the art and science of being reasonable and making informed decisions. In Unit 3, we will discuss how not to fall prey to conspiratorial thinking. Assignments will include writing reflection prompts, film discussions, applying inoculation techniques, analyzing disputes/discussions, etc.
