Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course is designed to provide students with no background in Vietnamese with the opportunities to develop sufficient competence in the Vietnamese language to achieve numerous communicative objectives. The course aims at systematically building the students’ abilities in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Vietnamese, while also providing them with a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture. It is expected that by the end of the course students will reach С1 level according to CEFR. The volume of the course is 12 credits.
Pre-requisites
To attend the course a student should have near-native command of the Russian language since one of the goals is to train fluent interpretation and translation from Russian to Vietnamese and vice versa.
Learning Objectives
- 1. To develop communicative competence: developing communicative skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in communicative scenarios and topics chosen for the course.
- 2. To develop language competence: learning new language units (orthographic, phonetic, lexical, grammar) related to communicative scenarios and topics of the course; learning about language phenomena in the foreign language, about various ways of expressing ideas using the native and foreign languages.
- 3. To develop socio-cultural competence: introducing students to the culture, traditions and realia of the country whose language they are learning; developing skills of presenting their country and its culture when communicating with foreigners.
- 4. To develop cognitive competence: developing general and special academic skills; familiarizing students with available ways of autonomous learning of a foreign language and culture, ICT included.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students have the ability to select and apply adequate translation strategies in accordance with the type of translation. Students are able to use the basic translation models and translation transformations when analyzing the translation process and its results.
- Students can adequately uses stable phrases, idioms within the studied topics;
- Students can recognize speech levels: official, unofficial, neutral, etc. Students are able to recognize linguistic markers of social relations and use them (greeting, farewell, emotional exclamation, etc.)

- Attendance
- Lesson testsDescription: Lesson tests are conducted during the course of a semester after every lesson in the main coursebook. They include dialogues and/or texts for translation from Russian into Vietnamese using vocabulary and grammar learned in the lesson, a grammar question and an interview (students are required to talk to the instructor on the topic of the Unit). The format of the test is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
- In-class assignmentDescription: In-class assignment is calculated as the average of grades awarded for various assessment activities conducted in class during the course of semester: vocabulary quizzes, short translations of dialogues/texts from Russian to Vietnamese, oral reading, dialogue enactment etc.
- WritingDescription: Writing is calculated as the average of grades for writing assignments on given topics
- ListeningDescription: Classwork for Listening is calculated as the average of grades awarded for phonetic dictations and listening comprehension tests conducted in class during the course of semester.
- HomeworkDescription: Homework is calculated as the average of grades for various homework written assignments such as grammar exercises in the textbook, translation of dialogues from Russian to Vietnamese and translations of newspaper articles from Vietnamese to Russian.
- SpeakingDescription: Classwork for Speaking is calculated as the average of grades for presence and participation and grades awarded for various assessment activities conducted in class: role plays, dialogue enactment, etc. The instructor has a right to increase the grade for speaking by 1 point to motivate hard-working and diligent students. At the same time, the instructor can decrease the grade for classwork by 1 point for not doing homework and not being prepared for the class.
- Home ReadingDescription: Home Reading is calculated as the average of grades for various assignments given by the instructor of this aspect.
- Final written assignmentDescription: Final written assignment is held within a period of 10 days before the exam session. It consists of a grammar question and translations of dialogues and/or a text from Russian to Vietnamese.
- Oral examinationDescription: Oral examination consists of a speech on a given topic (using active vocabulary and grammar), reading and interpreting a text and roleplay conversation with the examinator. The content of the oral examination is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
