Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides students with knowledge of the key concepts, theories, and research findings within the field of Occupational Health Psychology. It provides an overview of such concepts as job satisfaction, work engagement, burnout, workaholism and job boredom. It also gives an overview of such topics as work stress, leisure & recovery, work conflicts, leadership and diversity at work in their relationship to occupational health. The course presents key research-based instruments for assessment of different aspects of psychological well-being at work and provides basic knowledge of intervention techniques targeted at occupational health and flourishing.

Learning Objectives

  • At the end of the course, students are expected to have an understanding of the contemporary research on work-related stress and psychological (un)well-being at work, their predictors and outcomes at individual and organizational level. Students must be able to think critically when analyzing individual and industry best practices in the area of work-related (un)well-being. Students are expected to be able to design and implement basic interventions targeted at psychological well-being at work.

  • Distinguish between different types of psychological functioning at work / work-related (un)well-being

  • Apply knowledge about work stress, stress management and coping strategies
  • Differentiate different leadership styles in their associations to employee well-being

  • Analyze the pros and cons of diversity in the workplace
  • Distinguish different psychodiagnostic methods, understand their advantages and disadvantages for individual and organizational diagnostics

    In the beginning of seminars 2-6 students will have a short quiz (3-5 questions) to evaluate acquaintance with the reading material.
  • non-blocking Group Presentation
    Students will have to prepare a group presentation on one of the topics of OHP. The list of the topics will be provided during the Seminar 1.
  • non-blocking Final Test - OHP
    Final test on Occupational Health Psychology consists of questions with single or multiple choices and open questions requiring a short written reply. Students perform the test independently, without referring to written, printed or electronic sources. It is not allowed to use electronic devices that allow storing or transmitting information (mobile phones, etc.) during the test. In case of violation, the test grade will be set to 0.
  • non-blocking Final Test - MOOC
    Final test on the content of the on-line course "The Science of Happiness". The test consists of questions with single or multiple choices and open questions requiring a short written reply. Students perform the test independently, without referring to written, printed or electronic sources. It is not allowed to use electronic devices that allow storing or transmitting information (mobile phones, etc.) during the test. In case of violation, the test grade will be set to 0.
