Course Syllabus
Abstract
The Project Financing section provides a conceptual background for issues in structuring and implementing large long-term investment projects. The section offers an understanding of theoretical foundations and practical aspects of the decisions made throughout the lifecycle of such projects; and of diverse stakeholders that shape the project performance and risk structure. In analyzing projects’ performance and impact, the section seeks to combine the perspectives of sponsors and investors with the broader economy-wide perspectives. The Venture Financing section gives general overview of venture investments as one of the types of alternative investments, widely expanding asset class in last decades. This section will cover the history of venture industry, its role in economics and innovations, current state of affairs and dynamic. The section discovers how venture capital industry works, its inherent upsides and downsides, basics of investment process and valuation techniques, goals of the VC players and other equally important aspects.
Learning Objectives
- The main objective of the Project Financing section is to offer students a comprehensive framework for analyzing and structuring financing for large long-term projects. The section overviews key models of project finance, and discusses key issues that arise at each stage of the project cycle from project identification to ex-post impact evaluation. The section seeks to develop skills in financial planning and risk analysis relevant for different project finance structures; in designing financial models that inform managerial decisions at key points throughout a project’s lifecycle; and in effectively engaging all stakeholders which may affect the project’s viability. The course provides necessary knowledge for comprehensive assessment of long-term project sustainability and impact, covering both economic and non-economic (social, environmental etc.) dimensions of sustainability. Instruction includes multiple case studies of project finance structures implemented in countries and sectors at varying levels of complexity and project risks mixes.
- The main goal of the Venture Financing section is to provide students with a wide, however, general knowledge of Venture Capital Industry and with tools and resources to track it and self-develop to the level sufficient for participation in venture capital fundraising and analysis of potential investments into venture companies. The objective of this section is to survey the venture capital industry and to provide students with an understanding of the origination, valuation, execution, monitoring, and realization of venture capital transactions and of the process of investing in venture capital funds. Students should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of venture capital as a part of private equity, as well as major characteristics of the asset class: low liquidity, low transparency and disclosure, role of the investor as a limited partner in the partnerships used to finance venture investments, complex legal structures and performance-based compensation arrangements.
