Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course will provide an integrated coverage of methods of classroom instruction, management and assessment. The methodology of the course will include lectures, seminars, lesson construction, practice teaching, in class exercises, discussion of readings, and tests. The final output is taking a course exam in Theory and Methods of Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Learning Objectives
- The aim of the course is to build third year students’ competency, which enables them to provide effective teaching English as a foreign language at language schools in Russia. The course focuses particularly on the language that teachers need for use in the classroom, for talking and reading about methods of teaching and for furthering their studies in English as a foreign language. It also enables them to learn how to plan and conduct their own lessons in English.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge of: - basics of building and development of communicative competency in English as a foreign language; - contemporary requirements to teaching language construction and developing skills (both receptive and productive) and sociocultural competency pursuant to the CEFR levels in English;
- Knowledge of key concepts in Evaluation. Assessment types and tasks.
- Knowledge of key concepts in Managing the classroom. Learners and teachers.
- Knowledge of key concepts in Planning lessons.A proposal for action. Lesson shapes. Planning questions. Plan formats. After the lesson (and before the next).
- Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching Listening .
- Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching reading.
- Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching Speaking
- Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching writing.
- Knowledge of key concepts on the topic Lexis.
- Knowledge of methods on Describing the English language. Phonology.
