Course Syllabus
Abstract
During the course, students will gain skills in evaluating the effectiveness of the financial sector, including analytics of the banking system, insurance sector, securities market, and microfinance organizations. They will get acquainted with the business models of banks, gain decision-making skills for managing a bank based on its business model, analysis of assets, liabilities, and capital. During the course, students will be able to compile and analyze the profitability and risk of a portfolio of financial instruments. The features of the course are: the use of up-to-date databases of the Bank of Russia and leading statistical centers. The implementation of the course uses a case study based on data from real financial sector reporting and macroeconomic reporting.

- Analysis of different types of financial markets and instruments, with an explanation of their functions within the broader economic context
- Assessment of various investment strategies related to stocks, bonds, and derivatives, with application of portfolio management principles to optimize returns and minimize risks
- Examination of the functions and types of financial institutions, including banks and insurance companies, and their impact on financial markets and economic stability
- Identification and utilization of key risk management techniques, including hedging and diversification, to protect investments from financial catastrophes
- Understanding of the regulatory environment governing financial markets and institutions, with analysis of its effect on market practices and investor protection

- Practical Financial Market ResearchStudents are required to conduct an independent case study of the financial market. Form an optimal portfolio from the point of view of a rational investor, as well as develop a system of hedging potential risks of the formed portfolio.
