HSE Yacht Club Announces New Enrolment

HSE students and staff are invited to try their hand at yachting under the supervision of experienced instructors. The HSE Yacht Club will be holding theoretical and practical classes during the winter.

The HSE Yacht Club under HSE MIEM has trained amateur yacht enthusiasts and successfully participated in competitions for several decades. The club has a number of yachts, which are usually moored in Strogino Bay. Training is provided by experienced yacht instructors. The club regularly enrolls new members in autumn, so that they have several months of theoretical classes in order to prepare for the next navigation season.

However, people interested in joining the HSE Yacht Club still have an opportunity to try their hand at sailing this year. Instruction in basic yachting will be offered in Strogino on the two last Sundays of October.

On October 23, 2016, candidates for the club will be getting together at the water sports facility at Sports School No. 26 in Strogino. From there, they will take a trip around Serebryany Bor. The excursion will be headed by Alexey Dementyanov, captain of the yacht Arbalet. To register for the trip in advance, please call him at 8-916-642-35-65. Detailed information on how to get to the location on the northern bank of the Strogino Bay is available on the HSE Yacht Club’s website (in Russian).

On October 30, 2016, sailing instruction will be supervised by Andrey Maslov, instructor at the HSE Department of Physical Training (contact phone: 8-901-531-07-72). Also, on the same day, preparations of the yachts for mounting will start, including cleaning work and mast lowering. The yachts will then be transported to a winter storage site during the first week of November.

On November 8, 2016, a general enrolment meeting will take place. Classes are slated to commence on November 15.

The classes are part of the ‘Yacht Helmsman’ course, which will be held on Tuesdays, starting at 7 pm. Please note that the winter classes will be rather theoretical in nature. Students will have a chance to study the basics of navigation, technical details, the rules of steering and lockage, etc.

At the same time, on Sundays, club members will be engaged in practical classes on winter sailing. For example, winter windsurfing helps people develop their endurance and resistance to adverse conditions and ability to control sails, as well as teaches them how use wind force and bearing. During the spring, students will have the chance to test all of their acquired skills on the water, as part of classes and competitions, where HSE Yacht Club members regularly participate.
