HSE University Maintains Its Position in ARWU Ranking
HSE University has firmly entered the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which is known for its rigorous selection criteria. After placing in the ranking for the first time last year, HSE University maintained its position despite increased competition — more than 50 new universities entered the ranking for the first time this year.
Ranking in the 901-1000 group, HSE University is the only young Russian university to make the cut. Overall, the ranking includes eleven Russian universities, nine of which participate in the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100.
It is more challenging for young universities to advance in the ARWU, since their graduates do not yet have the achievements that the ranking takes into account, such as Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. HSE has long striven to enter the ranking, and the University managed to do so in 2018 thanks to its demonstrated growth in publication activity. This year, HSE University reaffirmed its place among the world’s best universities, many of which have long and rich histories.
In previous years, HSE expanded its presence in the ARWU ranking by placing in the subject area lists. HSE now ranks amongst the top 100 in mathematics and sociology, and it has improved its standing in the fields of political science and management while maintaining its position in economics. This year HSE has entered the subject rankings in psychology and business administration for the first time.
The ARWU evaluates universities in accordance with the following criteria: the number of publications in Nature and Science journals; the number of citations in the Science Citation Index, the Expanded Science Citation Index, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and Web of Science; and the number of Nobel laureates, Fields Medal holders, and highly cited researchers amongst a university’s faculty and graduates.
Published since 2003, the ARWU ranks 1,000 universities. The countries with the biggest presence in the ranking are the USA and China.
HSE University was able to place high on the Graduate Employability Ranking (201-250), outpacing its main competitors for the first time in five years. This year, the number of candidates to the ranking was increased 15% (758 universities), with new 36 universities joining the list.
THE WUR, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, has compiled its 2019 global rankings. HSE University performed positively, moving up to the 251-300 cohort, and taking third place among Russian universities following MSU and MIPT.
HSE recently placed 39th in the QS Top-50 ‘Under 50’ ranking, thus maintaining its position in the Top-40 despite increasing competition in this special academic category.
On June 24-26, 2020, the THE Young Universities Summit will be held for the first time at HSE University in Moscow.
