Join Russian Fridays and Compete in the Worldwide Total Dictation
On February 21, 2020, those who wish to compete in the worldwide Total Dictation can start taking prep classes offered by HSE at its complex located on Staraya Basmannaya. The classes will give students a chance to bone up on their Russian, or, as the writer Ivan Turgenev once called it, the ‘great and mighty’ Russian language.
Total Dictation is an annual competition that not only gives you the opportunity to test your knowledge of Russian in almost any corner of the world, but also to practice your spelling and punctuation in a series of ‘Russian Friday’ courses. Total Dictation prep courses have been offered for 10 years, and this year will be the second year they are offered at HSE, which is a strategic Moscow partner of the competition.
The prep course programme includes eight classes that each last 1.5-2 hours. The classes will cover both theoretical material as well as practical exercises. The course curriculum, which is tailored to the upcoming Total Dictation, was developed by the project’s Philological Council, which works on the text for more than six months up until the very start of the prep courses.
The first lesson of the prep course series will focus on the spelling rule -n/-nn (-н/-нн) in participles and adjectives. Before you register for the first lesson, test yourself with the IQ.HSE
On April 12, 2014, Total Dictation took place at the HSE – an all-Russian event to check literacy. Those interested in checking their level of Russian grammar skills participated in 350 cities spread over 45 countries. HSE campuses were among some of the venues used for this dictation.
