Among Russian universities, HSE University has the second highest number of subjects to be included in the Shanghai subject ranking (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020). HSE University and ITMO University, respectively, are included in 7 subject rankings, while Moscow State University is represented in 12 subject rankings.

Changes in the methodology of the Shanghai subject ranking this year led to significant changes in the ranking results. According to the compilers of the ranking, the previous PUB indicator—the number of articles published in WoS on a given subject—has been replaced by the number of articles published in Q1 (first quartile) journals. The change was introduced in order to encourage higher quality publications.

HSE University ranks first among Russian universities in 6 subjects, and second in Management. HSE ranks among the top 101-150 universities in Mathematics and Political Sciences, the top 151-200 universities in Sociology, and the top 201-300 in Economics.

The University has improved its standing in Psychology, where it now ranks among the top 301-400. In Business Administration, it retained its positions from last year in the same group. HSE University also ranks among the top 401-500 universities in Management.

Earlier this year, HSE took first place in a Forbes ranking of Russian universities and placed among the top 50 universities in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings and the QS '50 Under 50' World University Rankings.
