HSE Places among Top 5 Russian Universities in Nine Subjects in Publication Activity Ranking
In the Expert Analytical Centre’s 2020 Publication Activity Ranking, HSE University placed among the top three Russian universities in seven general subject areas and two narrow subjects. HSE made the rankings in 14 subject areas and four specific subjects; of these, HSE placed first in four subjects and/or areas.
The ranking evaluates Russian universities based solely on scientometric parameters. The ranking does not take into account estimated and interrogative indicators. This year, for the first time, the HSE took 1st place in artificial intelligence, and HSE continues to be the leader in economics, management, humanities, and mathematics. In addition, HSE improved its position in computer science, sharing 2nd-4th place with Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University.
Universities participating in Project 5-100 are steadily improving their positions in the Expert Publication Activity Ranking, with a noticeable increase in the number of universities who were among the second group of universities to join the project. While in 2017 the ranking’s top 20 universities included an average of 10 Project 5-100 ‘first-wave’ member universities alongside Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University, in 2020, the rankings now include 3 ‘second-wave’ Project 5-100 participants.
This year, the ranking modified its methodology. In 2019, the ranking assessed Russian universities in 14 general subject areas and seven specific subjects. In 2020, the list was expanded to include 16 general subject areas and five subjects.

In 2020, economics and management, which were previously presented as two subjects of one general area, were separated into two different subject areas. Earth sciences and ecology were also divided into separate areas. This year, the ranking includes five specific subjects: Metallurgy (under Materials Science), Biochemistry (under Life Sciences), Artificial Intelligence (under Computer Science), Hardware and Architecture (under Computer Science), and Safety, Risk, Reliability and Quality (under Engineering Sciences). The latter two subjects are new.
The methodology for determining the best university for a specific indicator has also changed. Previously, the university that ranked first in regard to a specific indicator received the maximum number of points (100). Now the top 5% of universities in a given indicator are considered the best.

This year, the university was ranked among the top universities for Communications for the first time and returned to the ranking for Sociology.
