In this issue of The HSE Look, we are happy to present three different takes on a long-running format of professional discussion of research - a seminar series, so as to both bring additional attention to events themselves, as well as enable organizers to share their experience with other colleagues. We hope that you will enjoy reading about the seminars in History, Sociology and Philosophy at different HSE schools and campuses.

Hardly anyone is unaware that several dozen research and teaching labs are active at HSE, where students making their first steps in academia work together with experienced researchers. Today, HSE is announcing a competition for new research and teaching laboratories as part of the Moscow campus faculties.

A good day starts with a good deed! From February 28 to March 2, ‘Open Your Eyes’, an HSE charity project, will be collecting items for elderly people at a nursing home in Klin. We invite you to get involved by donating any of the items listed below. You can also contact our volunteers to sign greeting cards, which will be delivered together with the items collected.

The Lunar New Year, or Tet holiday, is the most important and largest festival of the year in Vietnam. It is when the Vietnamese express their respects for their ancestors and welcome the lunar New Year with family members. The date of Tet is decided by the lunar calendar; this year, it began on Friday, February 16, and lasts until next weekend. 2018 is known as the year of the Golden Dog.

Every quarter at HSE, we hold a competition to support student initiatives. Projects that foster university development, as well as projects that have benefits for wider society, are recognized and awarded financial and organizational assistance.

Starting from February 12, books will start to appear on shelves in our HSE buildings on Myasnitskaya, Armyanskiy Pereulok and Strogino. You will be able to take them home, read them and return them to one of our HSE buildings whenever you want!

On January 25, HSE Vice Rector Igor Chirikov and staff of the Student Initiative Support Centre met with the heads of the University’s student associations. The participants of the meeting, which was organized by the HSE Student Council, summarized the results and outcomes of HSE’s jubilee year 2017, as well as discussed plans for 2018.

The traditional dip into icy water on the celebration of Jesus’ Baptism united brave HSE international students on January 18th for the third time.  The event was organised by ESN HSE. Two words sum up their impressions – ‘unique’ and ‘delightful’. The event took place at VDNKH where organizers arranged all the necessary services, including hot tea, a tent and medical assistance – which, luckily, wasn’t needed.

The HSE Social Committee and Student Councils at faculties have carried out a student survey on HSE cafeterias. The comments have been discussed at a meeting between students and catering providers at HSE buildings.

Leading sports journalists, photographers and managers will take part in a series of workshops and master classes around sports journalism. The series, sponsored by the HSE Extreme Sports Club and starting in January 2018, will be open to the public.
