The annual conference of CBEES (Centre for Baltic and East European Studies, Södertörn University, Sweden, Stockholm) "With and After Empire: Enduring Pasts Across the Local and the Global" was held on November 25-26. Laboratory's research assistant Maria Dolgova took part in the conference and had a presentation "The Origin of Ladies-in-Waiting of the Russian Imperial Court During the Reign of Nicholas I (1825-1855)".
A new article "Political Claims, an Extensible Name, and a Divine Mission: Ideology of Russian Expansion in Siberia" by the Leading Research Fellow Yury Akimov was published in the Journal of Early Modern History' fourth issue for 2021.
The increasing application of law in various spheres of life in the Russian empire promoted trade regulation and influenced everyday trade practices—even in remote regions. Tradespeople, in turn, tried to limit the application of new regulations while using laws to serve their own interests. HSE University has hosted a seminar on trade in Siberia in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
