BASEES Uppsala Conference 2018

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Uppsala University and the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies hosted a two-day conference that was held at Uppsala University in the middle of September 2018. ICSID team members Fabian Burkhardt, Noa Buckley and David Szakonyi took part in the Conference and presented their papers.

Research Seminar on Diversity and Development

A new series of the ICSID-CSDSI regular seminar on Diversity and Development started on September 11, 2018. Anand Sokhey's presentation "Beyond Thoughts and Prayers: The Christian Nationalism of the Gun Control Debate" opened the seminar series this new academic year. The event was held jointly with the seminar “Political Economy” and Economic Development and Growth Research Group.

Seminar "Average life expectancy and life years lost in people with mental disorders"

The 11th scientific seminar "Modern demography" was held on the 7th of September. Vladimir Canudas-Romo, PhD, associate professor of School of demography at College of arts and social sciences of Australian national university presented a paper "Average life expectancy and life years lost in people with mental disorders".

Triple Helix in Manchester

The University of Manchester (UK) hosted the XVI International Triple Helix Conference on 5-8 September, 2018. The ISSEK was represented by Mikhail Gershman, Deputy Director of the Centre for S&T, Innovation and Information Policy who presented new indicators which could help improve efficiency of public administration in the Russian R&D sphere.

Andrei Yakovlev as a guest researcher in Bremen

From August 13 to 25, 2018, IIMS Director Andrei Yakovlev is visiting the University of Bremen on invitation of the Faculty of Business Studies and Economics, working group of Jutta Günther. His visit takes place within the DAAD Eastern Partnership program and serves to continue and intensify joint academic research, exchange and development of future fields of cooperation.

The HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge presents information about Russia’s place in a ranking of countries by the number of academic publications on medical and health sciences.

The HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge published the statistical data book 'Education in figures'. It includes data describing the current state and development dynamics of the general, vocational, and higher education in Russia. Here are a few of the more interesting figures.

Russia in the World Publication Activity Ranking: Natural Sciences

Russia is ranked 10th in the world according to publication activity by scientists in the natural sciences. China and the USA top this ranking. Russia is among the top 5 countries in some fields of the natural sciences, while in others, by contrast, it makes a low contribution to world science. Historically, these results come from the disciplinary structure of the Russian science. In total, 3.7% of publications in these areas in international scientific journals were written with the participation of Russian scientists in 2015–2017.

108 Tools for Measuring and Managing Innovation

'National Report on Innovation in Russia' is published, for the third year in a row prepared by the Russian Venture Company (RVC), the RF Ministry of Economic Development, and the RF Government’s Expert Council. Experts from the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge also contributed to producing the report. They suggested a number of advanced research methodologies and new indicators for measuring innovation development in the country. The indicator panel applied in the new report comprises 108 positions.
