New Issue of HERB Focuses on Doctoral Studies

The ninth issue of Higher Education in Russia and Beyond, a journal that highlights current educational trends from Russia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe, has just been published.

The current issue focuses on the challenges of structuring and reforming doctoral education. While doctoral education is traditionally viewed as a means for training new generations of scholars, it is currently aimed at training professionals for non-academic sectors as well. Holders of PhDs who choose careers outside of academia are no longer considered ‘black sheep’, and doctoral programmes are increasingly being designed in a way that takes such non-academic career opportunities into account.

Given the shifting boundaries between universities and the outside world, especially in the context of new labour market demands, how efficient is contemporary doctoral education?

What indicators should be used to assess the efficiency of doctoral programmes?

To what extent do those indicators reflect the goals of modern doctoral education?

The efficiency of doctoral programmes may also depend on students’ goals and motivation. The present issue aims to shed light on who doctoral students are and why they have chosen this path.

The quality of doctoral education, requirements to earn a degree, and alumni employment opportunities are all directly related to institutional capacity. The present issue examines such questions as the extent to which modern doctoral education meets the challenges and goals of building world-class universities, experts’ views on how relevant reforms are being carried out, and what actions are already being taken.
