Course Syllabus

Abstract

Discourse Analysis: During this course, students will become familiar with the discourse theories of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, Nico Carpentier, Norman Fairclough, Teun A. van Dijk, as well as with Robert Entman's theory of media framing. They will also explore key analytical methods based on these theories and learn how to apply them in practice; Quantitative Text Analysis: The course is organised around three main families of approaches: frequency and dictionary-based analysis, sentiment, stance and text classification and thematic analysis. Students also receive a practical introduction to Google Colab and Python Jupiter for basic operations with textual datasets and use generative AI for supervised text annotation and classification. The component concludes with the design and discussion of a small independent research project based on textual data; Quantitative studies, regressions: The course is organised around three main families of approaches: frequency and dictionary-based analysis, sentiment, stance and text classification and thematic analysis. Students also receive a practical introduction to Google Colab and Python Jupiter for basic operations with textual datasets and use generative AI for supervised text annotation and classification. The component concludes with the design and discussion of a small independent research project based on textual data; Quantitative studies, regressions: the course will consider machine learning techniques that could be used for academic research on key issues in international relations and public policy, including decision trees, gradient boosting, neural networks, etc. The course will also offer ready-made AI tools, developed using machine learning methods and neural networks, to collect and analyse relevant literature.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Discourse Analysis: To facilitate theoretical understanding of the discursive construction of reality
  • Discourse Analysis:  To develop methodological skills necessary for analyzing political texts using various types of discourse and framing analysis
  • Discourse Analysis:  To acquire practical skills in applying specific discourse-analytical methods to empirical studies of socio-political reality
  • Quantitative Text Analysis: 1. To provide students with an applied understanding of quantitative text analysis and its use in research on international relations and regional studies, including the main types of research questions, textual data and methodological limitations
  • Quantitative Text Analysis: 2. To develop students’ ability to translate a research question into a workable text-as-data design by selecting appropriate sources, time periods, units of analysis and corpus characteristics
  • Quantitative Text Analysis: 3.To provide students with basic practical skills for working with textual datasets in Google Colab and Python environment
  • Quantitative Text Analysis: 4.To familiarise students with three core approaches used in the course (frequency and dictionary-based analysis, text classification including sentiment and stance and thematic analysis) and with basic procedures for interpreting and validating their results
  • Quantitative Text Analysis: 5. To prepare students to select an appropriate method for a specific research question and to present a small independent text-based research project, including its data, method, findings and limitations
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn to apply key principles such as objectivity and replicability to design and conduct their own research
  • The results of the seminar will be a comprehensive understanding of different research methodologies and the ability to select the most suitable approach for various research contexts. Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to design and implement qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research, enhancing their overall research skills.
  • The results of the seminar will be a comprehensive understanding of various research project types and the ability to design and execute effective research studies. Participants will gain insights into how to choose the right research approach for different questions and contexts, enhancing their analytical and methodological skills.
  • The results of the seminar will be a comprehensive understanding of these qualitative methods and the ability to effectively choose and apply them in research. Participants will develop skills in designing and conducting qualitative research, enhancing their ability to gather and analyze rich, detailed data for complex social phenomena.
  • The results of the seminar will be a thorough understanding of textual analysis techniques and their relevance to qualitative research. Participants will learn how to apply these methods to examine language, meaning, and context within texts, enhancing their analytical skills and ability to draw insights from qualitative data.
  • The results of the seminar will be an understanding of how to leverage AI tools effectively in academic research, awareness of ethical considerations, and practical skills for applying AI in writing and research tasks. Participants will learn to use AI to enhance literature searches, streamline writing processes, and critically engage with AI’s impact on their work.
