Course Syllabus

Abstract

The discipline "Innovation Engineering" is aimed at developing a systemic understanding among Master's students of the principles, methods, and tools for managing the creation and implementation of innovative products, services, and technologies. The content of the discipline is structured according to the logic of transition from strategy to implementation methods. The course considers an innovation project as a complex system in which product, service, technology, organizational structure, and marketing develop simultaneously — the PUTOM model (Product, Service, Technology, Organizational Structure, Marketing). This approach allows evaluating an innovation not only from the perspective of technical feasibility but also taking into account its production, organizational, financial, and market readiness. Mastering the discipline forms competencies necessary for working as an innovation project manager, R&D manager, technology entrepreneur, technology transfer specialist, technological maturity expert, and consultant in the field of managing the innovative development of organizations. The discipline is built around a continuous group project: each homework assignment is a complete section of the final proposal, while the exam represents its defense. Teams work either with their own developments or with those proposed by the instructor. Prerequisites: The study of the discipline material is based on the disciplines "Corporate Innovation," "Methodology and Practice of Innovation Activity in Modern Conditions," "Theoretical Innovatics," and "Management of Innovation Projects, Programs, and Risks." Post-requisites: The results of mastering the discipline can be applied within the framework of studying the disciplines "Research Seminar 'Research Work in Master's Program'," "Mentor's Seminar," as well as during the preparation and defense of the Final Qualification Paper (Graduation Thesis).

  • Applies strategic tools for managing innovation activities and develops a development strategy for innovative projects.
  • Identifies constraints in an innovation project and develops measures to eliminate them based on the Theory of Constraints (TOC).
  • Uses the PUTOM model (Product, Service, Technology, Organizational structure, Marketing) for a comprehensive assessment of an innovative product.
  • Develops the concept of an innovative product and aligns its technical, technological, organizational, and market characteristics.
  • Designs the architecture of innovative processes and distributes responsibilities among their participants.
  • Applies the Stage-Gate approach to structure the life cycle of an innovation project, defining stages, control points, readiness criteria, and management decision-making procedures; identifies, assesses, and ranks supply chain risks using FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and the "Probability × Severity" risk matrix; develops measures to ensure resilience and agility of the innovation project's supply chain.
  • Designs R&D and Experimental Design work processes, determining their deliverables, resources, and performance indicators.
  • Formulates requirements, prepares a Technical Specification, a testing program, and a set of project documentation.
  • Designs processes for creating, testing, and refining a prototype.
  • Designs pilot production engineering processes (OKP) and evaluates scalability readiness.
  • Manages intangible assets, financing, budgeting, reporting, and the integrated implementation of an innovation project.
  • Establishes a quality management system, conducts a technology audit, and assesses the technological maturity of the project.

    Homework assignments are completed upon the results of each of the twelve thematic blocks of the course (Lectures and Seminars 1–12) and constitute sections of a continuous analysis of the supply chain for the chosen innovative project.

    Format: Defense of a group project (teams of 3–5 people) before the instructor and invited experts. Regulation: 12 minutes for the team's presentation, 10 minutes for questions.
